Rowing Closes Out Season at MAAC Championships

The Canisius rowing team closed out the 2023-24 season on Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Griffins took part in the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rowing Championships at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken Township, N.J.

Canisius scored six points and placed seventh in the championship. Jacksonville won its third-consecutive MAAC Rowing title after the Dolphins finished the day with a perfect 42-point total, earning victories in the varsity 8, second varsity 8 and varsity 4. The championship stands as Jacksonville's eighth overall conference title.

After the day's events, the MAAC announced that junior Hannah Kenefick and sophomore Addie Naylor were named to the 2024 All-MAAC Second Team. For Kenefick, this marks the second consecutive year where she has earned All-MAAC honors, while the appointment to the league's second team is the first all-conference honor for Naylor.

The Griffs' varsity 4 entry placed sixth in its race with a time of 8:47.04, finishing ahead of Drake. Jacksonville won the varsity 4 race with a time of 8:07.74. In the second varsity 8 race, Canisius placed sixth with a time of 7:57.10, again finishing in front of Drake.

In the day's final event, the varsity 8 race, race officials disqualified Canisius' boat after it was damaged at the starting line and deemed unfit for competition. The Griffs' varsity 8 did not compete in the race and received no points toward the championship standings.

POST-RACE COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH KERRI BRACE:
"To say I am devastated about today's events would be an understatement. That crew, and our whole team, worked really hard this year and to see it end on a note like this is hard to process."

"I do want to recognize that our four and 2v8 raced hard, and put together strong races, and they will continue to build upon the efforts shown today. Our V8 has been competitive all year with members of the MAAC, and our collective disappointment in missing the race was truly a testament to how much we wanted to compete."

"I am proud of the way my team handled themselves in the face of adversity, and I know that we will all learn and grow from this as individuals and as a team."
