Connor, Haskins Honored with AHA Weekly Awards

Canisius seniors Powell Connor and Kyle Haskins were both recognized as the Atlantic Hockey Association announced its weekly awards on Monday.

A native of Chilliwack, British Columbia, Connor was recognized as the AHA's Defensive Player of the Week while Haskins, a product of Huntington, Vt., was tabbed the circuit's Player of the Week.

Both players were honored after they recorded a goal and an assist in the Golden Griffins' 5-2 victory over Mercyhurst in the first round of the 2024 Atlantic Hockey Association Postseason last Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter.

Turning in the first multiple-point performance of his career, Connor registered a secondary assist on fellow senior Griffin Loughran's first-period goal before netting his first collegiate tally with a shorthanded empty-netter in the final two minutes of regulation to seal the win. Connor also added in a blocked shot, adding to his team-leading total of 73.

Haskins also picked up a secondary helper in the first period, drawing an assist on graduate student Erik Urbank's opening goal. He netted the eventual game-winning tally late in the second period on an unassisted effort, beating Mercyhurst netminder Owen Say with a wrist shot to the blocker side after corralling a Laker turnover deep in their zone. At the dot, Haskins was 8-of-16 on faceoffs. He also contributed two blocked shots in the victory.

No. seed 8 Canisius (12-19-4) travels to No. 2 seed Holy Cross this weekend for a best-of-three quarterfinal round series at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. Puck drop for the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. If necessary, a winner-takes-all game three will be played Sunday at 6 p.m.
