Giampa Named AHA Rookie of the Year

Canisius freshman forward Matteo Giampa has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association's Rookie of the Year, league officials announced on Tuesday.
 
Having already received All-AHA Second Team and AHA All-Rookie Team distinction, Giampa added to his trophy case on Tuesday as he became just the second player in program history to be tabbed the AHA's top rookie, joining Dave Kostuch (2008-09) on the exclusive list.
 
A native of Virgil, Ontario, Giampa turned in one of the top freshmen scoring seasons in Atlantic Hockey history in 2023-24, tallying 35 points on 18 goals and 17 assists to lead Canisius all three categories. His point and goal totals both tie for third in AHA history among freshmen.
 
Giampa also ranked among the top Division I freshmen scorers this season, sitting tied for fourth in goals and 10th in points among all first-year players.
 
A two-time AHA Rookie of the Month (November & January) selection and the AHA Player of the Month for November, Giampa scored multiple points on 11 occasions during the 2023-24 season, finishing with two goals in four games while dishing out two-or-more assists in five contests.
 
In 26 league games, Giampa was one of just seven skaters in the AHA to average more than a point per game as he paced the Griffs with 27 points on 14 goals and 13 assists. He ranked among the top 10 in the AHA in all three major offensive statistical categories during league play, placing third in goals, tied for fifth in points and tied for 10th in assists.
 
Giampa recorded a team-high 93 shots on goal during the regular season. He finished with three-or-more shots on goal in 19 contests, compared to just eight games where he had just one shot on target of fewer.
