Sangha and van der Plas Earn MAAC Weekly Awards

Canisius graduate student Jasman Sangha and freshman Evan van der Plas were named the Hercules Tires MAAC Men's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Sangha is the first Canisius player to be named the Hercules Tires MAAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week since former guard Siem Uijtendaal earned the honor Dec. 11, 2023. van der Plas is Canisius' first Hercules Tires MAAC Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week since Tahj Staveskie was recognized as the league's top rookie on March 6, 2023.

In the Golden Griffins' game against Maine Dec. 14, Sangha scored a career-high 26 points with four rebounds, a career-high three steals and two assists in 34:15 of action. He finished the contest against the Black Bears by going 9-for-14 from the field, which included a pair of makes from 3-point land, and he was also successful on 6-of-7 chances from the free-throw line. His 26 points in the game are the most for a Canisius frontcourt player since Scott Hitchon scored 28 points in a home victory over FGCU on Dec. 22, 2021.

van der Plas came off the bench and scored a season-high eight points in the loss to Maine after he went 3-for-4 from the floor, with two of those makes coming from behind the 3-point arc. He also grabbed two rebounds and dished out an assist with 21:20 of game action.

Canisius is set to close out non-league play with a pair of games this week, starting Dec. 18, at Loyola Chicago. That contest will tip-off at 8 p.m. (Eastern time). The Griffs will also play at Bradley on Dec. 21. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+, and Canisius' audio call will be available through the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network at GoGriffs.com and the Varsity Sports APP.
