Lafayette Stuns Women's Lacrosse in Double Overtime

Box Score Lafayette's Abby Romano scored 30 seconds into the second overtime period to down Canisius, 10-9, in collegiate women's lacrosse action Saturday at Fisher Stadium in Easton, Pa.

The Golden Griffins record moved to 3-2 with the setback while the Leopards picked up their first win of the season as they improved to 1-5.

Sarah Bennett, Genevieve Strobel and Sara Rogers tallied two goals each for Lafayette with Strobel and Jordan Siemonsen adding in three ground balls as well. In net, Lexie Coldiron made four saves on 13 shots faced.

Senior midfielder Paige Stachura paced the Griffs with a season-high five goals, falling one short of her career high of six set on April 2, 2022 against Iona. Graduate student midfielder Skylar McArthur recorded her fourth hat trick of the season and junior midfielder Maddie Mazur would add in the only other goal for the Blue and Gold. Defenders Jill Galanti and Meghan Ellis would each pick up a team-high three ground balls while in net, freshman Jody Chu tallied a season-best 17 saves.

With Lafayette holding a 9-8 lead during the final minute of regulation, Stachura was able to force overtime when found a pocket of space and fired the ball into the back of the net with 42 seconds remaining to knot the score at 9-all.

Each side would be kept scoreless in the opening overtime frame, but would register two shots apiece, with Chu and Coldiron each making a pair of saves.

In the second overtime frame, Lafayette's Lindsay Geiger would win the opening draw and flip the ball to Romano, who would author the game-winning goal just 30 seconds in to lift the Leopards to victory.

Earlier in the contest, Canisius held a 1-0 lead thanks to Stachura before Lafayette took control the rest of the quarter, tallying four the last five goals of the frame to hold a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Canisius would strike early in the second quarter off a goal from McArthur before adding in another goal with less than two minutes left in the half from Stachura to tie the game 4-all. The Leopards would regain the lead moments later, scoring twice with less than a minute to play to enter halftime ahead, 6-4.

Canisius would come alive in the third quarter, scoring three goals in a span of 2:56 to erase a two-goal deficit and take a 7-6 lead with 10:12 to play in the frame. Stachura, McArthur and Mazur would all find the back of the net during the Griffs run.

The Leopards once again found an answer, netting two goals to close the frame and retake the lead, 8-7, entering the final quarter of regulation, setting the stage for the fourth quarter and overtime.

Game Notes:
• Saturday's game marked the first-ever meeting between Canisius and Lafayette.
• This is the first time since March 30, 2019, against Quinnipiac that Canisius lost a game in overtime.
• As a team, Canisius was 15-of-21 (.714) on clears while Lafayette was 9-of-10 (.900).
• With her five points in the contest, Stachura has now recorded at least one point in 21 consecutive contests. The streak dates back to Feb. 12, 2022 against Bucknell where she finished the day with three points.
• Chu's 17 saves fall three short of the program record of 20, last matched by Lauren Gilbert on March 30, 2019, against Quinnipiac.

The Blue and Gold will take the week off before facing Robert Morris in their home opener on March 14. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
