Women's Basketball Stumped by Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac led wire-to-wire as it defeated Canisius, 73-36, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Thursday at M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn.

The Bobcats (16-7, 11-3 MAAC) were paced by Jackie Grisdale, who scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Rose Caverly added in 11 points of her own while also chipping in a game-high eight assists. As a team, Quinnipiac shot 26-of-57 (.456) from the field and enjoyed a 42-14 advantage on the glass.
 
Sophomore guard Cheyenne Stubbs led the Golden Griffins (6-16, 3-10 MAAC) in scoring with 13 points with junior guard Dani Haskell adding in nine tallies of her own. As a team, the Blue and Gold shot just 13-of-44 (.295) from the floor for the contest. 
 
Holding an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Bobcats would take control of the game in second, outscoring Canisius by a 
16-4 margin during the frame to build a 34-17 advantage at the break. Grisdale led Quinnipiac with five points during the frame as the Bobcats shot 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-6 from deep while the Blue and Gold were limited to just 2-of-9 shooting from the floor.
 
The second half saw Quinnipiac open the third quarter on a 13-0 run to build a commanding 47-17 cushion with less than five minutes to play in the frame. Freshman Brooklyn Thrash got Canisius on the scoreboard in the third with a layup at the 4:31 mark of the frame, but the Griffs found themselves down, 58-27, heading into the fourth quarter. 
 
Quinnipiac would outscore the Griffs, 15-9, during the fourth quarter to determine the final margin.

Game Notes:

• Thursday's game served as the return of Canisius Director of Basketball Operations, Cat Almeida, to Quinnipiac. Almeida played for the Bobcats from 2019-2022, where she appeared more than 30 games.
• For the second time this season, Canisius shot below 30 percent from the floor, with the first instance coming on Nov. 26 at Robert Morris. Against the Colonials, the Griffs went 18-of-62 (.290) in the loss.
• Sophomore guard Xanthippi Karatasiou appeared in her first game since Dec. 7 against St. Bonaventure. The Katerini, Greece, native played in a season-high five minutes.
• Canisius was just 1-of-11 from 3-point range on Thursday, matching their season low for 3-point field goals made (Nov. 30 vs UAlbany).
