Women's Basketball Ends Losing Skid With Win at Marist

Canisius held Marist scoreless for the final 4:06 of the contest to snap its losing streak with a 52-46 victory in MAAC women's basketball action Saturday evening at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Sophomore guard Cheyenne Stubbs led the Golden Griffins (7-16, 4-10 MAAC) in scoring with 12 points while junior guard Dani Haskell added in 10 points of her own. On the glass, Stubbs, along with sophomore guard Athina Lexa, each collected a game-high seven rebounds. As a team, Canisius out-rebounded the Red Foxes, 41-35. The Griffs also shot slightly better from the floor, going 18-of-59 (30.5 percent), compared to 13-of-47 (27.7 percent) by Marist.

The Red Foxes (10-13, 6-8 MAAC) were paced by Morgan Tompkins and Zaria Shazer who each had 13 points. Tompkins and Kiara Fisher each corralled a team-high six rebounds on the glass. The win, coupled with the Griffs' win over the Red Foxes at the Koessler Athletic Center on Dec. 19, gives the Blue and Gold the regular-season sweep of Marist for the first time since the 2001-02 campaign.

Tied 38-38 entering the fourth quarter, Marist scored three-straight points to make the score 41-38 in favor Red Foxes with 8:50 to play. A minute later, Canisius knotted the game back up at 41-41, courtesy of a tradition 3-point play by graduate student Vannessa Garrelts. Marist would later hold a 45-43 lead, but the Griffs used a 5-1 scoring surge, kick started by a bucket by Haskell, to give the visiting team a 50-46 lead with 35 seconds left to play. Marist had a chance to make it a one possession game in the contest's closing 20 seconds, but the Red Foxes turned the ball over and Haskell hit a pair from the free-throw line to seal the victory.

Out of the break, Canisius would step up on defense, keeping the Red Foxes off the board for the remainder of the game while adding in five more points of their own to secure the victory.

Earlier in the contest, the two sides would exchange 3-pointers to open the game, Marist and Canisius would be caught in a back-and-forth affair during the middle of the frame before a brief 6-2 run by the Red Foxes, ignited by a pair of makes from the charity stripe by Shazer at the 3:17 mark, gave them a 16-11 cushion with 2:07 left to play in the quarter.

The Blue and Gold were able to answer the Red Foxes run with a pair of baskets from freshman forwards Adrien LaMora and Chloe Chard Peloquin while also keeping them off the board for the remainder of the stanza to enter the second quarter down one, 16-15.

Just as they did on Dec. 19 at home, Canisius limited Marist to less than ten points in the second quarter, this time holding the Red Foxes to just six points on 2-of-10 (.200) shooting.

Even with just eight tallies of their own during the same span, Eleko helped put the Blue and Gold back in the lead, scoring five of the Griffs eight points in the quarter to give Canisius a slim, 23-22, edge entering halftime.

After surrendering the opening score of the quarter, Canisius would take over, going on its largest run of the game, a 12-6 run over the middle 4:08 of the frame to leap ahead, 35-30, with 4:45 left in the half. Leading the run for Canisus was Chard Peloquin with five points while Stubbs added in a make from deep.

Marist would answer back, going on an 8-3 spurt of their own, while limiting Canisius to just 1-of-7 shooting from the floor, to send each side to the fourth quarter tied 38-all and set up Canisius for their late game defensive heroics.

Game Notes:
  • With the win, Canisius has eclipsed its total win total from last season.
  • Saturday's game marked the fifth time this season and fourth in MAAC play that Canisius has limited an opponent to less than 10 points in the second quarter. The last instance came on Jan. 12 at Rider when the Griffs held the Broncs to just eight points during the second stanza.
  • Garrelts tied her career-high in steals with five which she set earlier this season on Nov. 30 against UAlbany.
  • This is the first time under Nusseibeh that the Griffs swept the regular season series against a MAAC opponent.
  • For the first time since a stretch from Mar. 1, 2001 through Jan. 24, 2003 that Canisius defeated Marist in three-or-more consecutive contests. The current winning streak against the Red Foxes dates back to Feb. 12, 2022 when the Griffs won, 65-61.
