Mastrodonato Honored as AHA Player of the Month

Senior forward Keaton Mastrodonato has been named the Atlantic Hockey Association's Player of the Month, league officials announced on Tuesday.

A native of Powell River, British Columbia, Mastrodonato was recognized after registering a team-high 15 points on 10 goals and five assists to help lead the Griffs to a 7-3-0 record during the final month of the regular season. He tallied multiple goals on four occasions as he finished with two or more points in five of the 10 games played.

With his 10-goal output in February, Mastrodonato became the first Canisius player to record 10 or more goals in a 10-game span since former Griffs standout Ralph Cuddemi notched 10 tallies during a 10-game sequence between Dec. 6 and Jan. 24 of the 2014-15 season.

Mastrodonato began the month with a two-goal performance in the series opener against nationally-ranked RIT at home on Feb. 3 before notching a goal and an assist in a 4-3 road triumph at Mercyhurst on Feb. 10. He followed that effort by scoring the game-winning goal in a 2-0 shutout of the Lakers the next day to complete the series sweep.

In the series finale at Air Force on Valentine's Day, Mastrodonato scored two goals, including the game-winner, in a 4-1 victory over the Falcons. He became the program's career shorthanded goals leader during a two-goal outing against Sacred Heart on Feb. 18 that also saw him record his third game-winning goal of the month. Mastrodonato closed out February by matching his career high with three points on two goals and an assist in a 6-3 victory at Holy Cross on Feb. 25 that helped Canisius earn home ice for the first round of the 2023 Atlantic Hockey Postseason.

The fourth seed for the AHA Postseason, Canisius opens the tournament with a best-of-three quarterfinal round series against No. 5 seed Army March 3-5 at LECOM Harborcenter. Game times are set for 7 p.m. on Friday, 7:35 p.m. on Saturday and if necessary, 5 p.m. on Sunday.
