• First Pitch
The Canisius baseball team opens its 2023 season in Charleston, S.C. at the Swig and Swine Classic Feb. 25-26. The Griffs face off against Boston College and Merrimack Saturday and Ball State and George Mason on Sunday to wrap up the series. 
 
• Nice to Meet You
Canisius will face Ball State, Boston College and Merrimack for the first time in the team's 70 year history this weekend.
 
The Blue and Gold has faced George Mason 10 times in program history, with the holding a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series.
 
• Welcome Back
Canisius returns 28 players from last year's MAAC Championship roster. The roster features reigning MAAC Player of the Year Max Grant, Reliever/Rookie of the Year Peyton Consigli and MAAC Strikeout record holder Matt Duffy. 
 
The Griffs return 87 pct of the team's innings pitched from 2022 (405) and all of the pitchers who made the 54 starts.

Offensively, the team brings back 64.5 pct. of the hits (369) and 86.1 pct. of the team's swiped bags (62) from the championship campaign.
 
• Preseason Looks
Seven Griffs received a total of 23 preseason honors from multiple publications and the conference.
 
Max Grant was named the conference's Player of the Year by the MAAC, D1 Baseball and Perfect Game while also garnering Preseason All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and the NCWBA. Grant was also named the 16th-best second baseman by D1 Baseball in the website's Top 50 ranking and the second-best 2023 draft prospect in the MAAC.
 
Matt Duffy claimed conference Pitcher of the Year preseason honors by D1 Baseball and Perfect Game while being ranked as the 83rd-best starting pitcher in D1 Baseball's Top 200 chart. Duffy was also named the top prospect in the 2023 MLB draft by the website.
 
Mike DeStefano was an All-MAAC Preseason selection and earned the right of the ninth-best 2023 MLB draft prospect, giving Canisius three in the top-10.
 
Peyton Consigli garnered a Preseason Conference selection by Perfect Game and was named the top prospect in the MAAC in the 2024 MLB Draft.
 
• Heading to Virginia
Canisius will return to the diamond March 3-5 for the Central Virginia Classic in Richmond, Va. The Griffs will play VCU Friday at 3 p.m., Richmond Saturday at 10 a.m. and William & Mary on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Sunday's contest will be the first against former Canisius head coach Mike McRae, who led the Griffs from 2005-2017.
