Women's Lacrosse Uses Second Half Surge to Defeat Stetson

Box Score Canisius outscored Stetson, 11-3, in the second half to leave DeLand, Fla., with a 17-10 win in Sunday afternoon intercollegiate women's lacrosse action at the Stetson Athletic Training Center.
 
Skylar McArthur and Paige Stachura paced the Golden Griffins (3-0) offensively as both finished with four goals while Stachura added an assist for a five-point afternoon. Kaitlyn Salce and Riley Davis also helped the Griffs offense as both finished with a hat trick. Freshman attacker Meg Hiltz picked up two assists while junior defender Meghan Ellis led the Griffs with two caused turnovers. In net, freshman Jody Chu notched a season-best 13 saves in the win.
 
For the Hatters (0-2), Jessica Duggan led the way with three goals while Kaitlin Pani notched four points on one goal and three assists. Molly Kearney tied Ellis for the game-high in caused turnovers with two, while in net, Sydney Heimman made five saves.
 
After allowing the first goal of the contest, Canisius would come alive in the middle of the first quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to grab a 5-1 lead with 1:08 left in the frame. McArthur paced the Griffs during the streak, scoring twice for the Blue and Gold. The Hatters would make it 5-2 with just 22 seconds left in the frame after Jordyn Humphrey found the back of the net.
 
Canisius and Stetson would exchange goals to open the second quarter, with Salce finding the back of the net for the Griffs on a free-position shot. The Hatters would take control for the rest of the frame, scoring the finale four goals of the half to enter halftime ahead, 7-6.
 
For the third consecutive contest, Canisius kept an opponent scoreless in a quarter as Chu saved all five of Stetsons' shots.
 
The Griffs were once again able to capitalize on a strong performance from their netminder, scoring five unanswered goals to enter the fourth quarter ahead, 11-7. Both McArthur and Davis would complete their hat tricks during the frame.
 
Each side would score twice to begin the final frame, but the Griffs offense closed out the game on a 4-1 run to secure the victory. Stachura would score three of the Griffs' final four goals of the contest to finish her five-point afternoon.
 
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"I'm incredibly proud of my team today. We grinded out an exciting win today against a fast, athletic team. To be able to pull away in the second half in the heat showed the heart of this team."

"Paige was special today. From the first whistle she brought the energy and grit and I'm glad it translated to points on the board for her."
 
Game Notes:

• For the second straight season, Canisius began the season 3-0. Prior to last season, the Blue and Gold had never started a year 3-0.
• This was the first ever meeting between Canisius and Stetson on the women's lacrosse field. Today's game also marked the first time the Blue and Gold played an opponent from Florida.
• For the third time under Allen, the Griffs won a game when trailing at halftime
• Chu has shutout an opponent during the third quarter for the second time this season. The first instance came on Feb. 12 at Detroit Mercy
• With her five points in the contest, Stachura has now recorded at least one point in 19 consecutive contests. The streak dates back to Feb. 12, 2022 against Bucknell where she finished the day with three points.
  
Up Next:
The Griffs will take the week off before heading to the Quaker State to face ACC foe Pitt. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. on Feb. 28.
