Women's Lacrosse Downs Little Three Rival St. Bonaventure

Box Score Paige Stachura and Caroline Netti each notched a hat trick for the second consecutive contest to pace Canisius in a 13-9 victory over Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in collegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Tom '80 and Michelle Marra Athletic Field Complex in Olean, N.Y.
 
Netti paced the Golden Griffins (2-0) offense with five goals while Stachura added in an assist, three ground balls and two caused turnovers to compliment her four goals. Graduate student attacker Ivy Santana notched her first career points in a Blue and Gold uniform with a trio of assists. MAAC Defender and Rookie of the Week Jody Chu made six saves in net for Canisius.
 
The Bonnies (0-2) were led by Jessica Notaro who finished with a hat trick in the loss. Ashley Herrick made 11 saves between the pipes for St. Bonaventure.
 
The Griffs were hot off the opening whistle, scoring three goals in less than two minutes to open up an early 3-0 lead. Leading the way was Netti, who scored her fifth goal of the season while Stachura added two tallies of her own.
 
St. Bonaventure would control the rest of the first quarter, scoring five of the next six goals to hold a 5-4 after 15 minutes of action.
 
For the second straight game, the Blue and Gold would keep an opponent scoreless in a quarter, as Chu stopped all four of St. Bonaventure's shots. The Griffs were able to capitalize on Chu's performance in net, scoring three goals of their own to end the half ahead, 7-5.
 
Canisius would strike first again coming out of the break, this time with Stachura netting her fourth of the contest, to extend the Griffs' lead to 8-5. The Griffs and Bonnies would trade goals to close the third quarter, but Canisius remained in front, 11-7, entering the fourth quarter.
 
The fourth quarter saw Canisius and St. Bonaventure score two goals each, with Netti and freshman Maggie Tifft each finding the back of the net, allowing the Griffs to secure the four-goal victory. 
 
Post Game Comments from Head Coach Russell Allen:
"Today was a not a strong showing for us, but we were able to walk away with a win. We have a lot to work on and learn from after this game so we can grow as the season progresses." 
 
Game Notes:

• Wednesday's game served as the first time since the 2020 season that Canisius and Little Three rival St. Bonaventure have faced one another. Canisius has now won the last eight meetings and leads the all-time series, 9-7.
• Canisius led the game in caused turnovers, 10-4. Stachura and Colangelo of St. Bonaventure each had a game-high two caused turnovers.
• Stachura has now recorded at least one point in 18 consecutive contests. The streak dates back to Feb. 12, 2022 against Bucknell where she finished the day with three points.
• Netti scored five goals for the third time in her career. The last instance came on March 16, 2022 against UAlbany.
• The Blue and Gold improve to 2-0 this season when wearing their blue uniforms with Wednesday's victory.

Canisius heads to the Sunshine State to face Stetson for the first time in program history on Feb. 19. Opening draw from DeLand, Fla., is set for noon with the game available to watch on the Stetson Athletics YouTube channel.
