Barczewski Named AHA Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Hockey Tabbed Fifth in Preseason Poll

Canisius senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski has been named an Atlantic Hockey Association Preseason Co-Player of the Year, league officials announced on Tuesday.
 
A native of O'Fallon, Mo., Barczewski was also recognized along with Sacred Heart's Neil Shea and RIT's Carter Wilkie. Barczewski was also named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Hockey Team, joining Shea, Wilkie, Blake Bennett (AIC), Logan Britt (Sacred Heart) and Brandon Koch (Air Force).
 
An All-AHA First Team selection last season, Barczewski started 29 games between the pipes for the Golden Griffins in 2021-22, recording 13 wins. He ranked third in the league and 14th nationally with a .923 save percentage and was also third on the circuit with a 2.42 goals against average.
 
Barczewski averaged 27.1 saves per game, highlighted by four outings in which he recorded 40 or more stops. He allowed two goals or fewer in 14 of his 29 games played, including four of his last five appearances of the season.
 
In the preseason coaches' poll, Canisius was picked fifth with 62 total points. Defending regular season and tournament champion AIC was picked first after receiving eight first-place votes and 88 total points. Sacred Heart received the other two first-place votes and 76 total points to claim second while Air Force (68) was third and RIT (66) fourth. Army (56), Mercyhurst (37), Bentley (33), Niagara (31) and Holy Cross (23) rounded out the poll.
 
Canisius hosts Niagara in a preseason exhibition contest at LECOM Harborcenter on Oct. 1 before opening the regular season with a two-game series Oct. 7-8 at Penn State. The regular season home opener takes place Oct. 18 with a non-conference contest against RPI.
