FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. First Pitch
The Canisius softball team hosts Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara in its regular-season finale on May 8.

First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex. Both contests are slated to be broadcasted on ESPN3.

Prior to the opening game of the twin bill, a pregame ceremony will be held to honor the senior class.

2. Battle of the Bridge
Canisius closes out the regular season by facing Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara. The Griffs have won four of the last six meetings against the Purple Eagles dating back to the 2019 campaign.

In their four contests last season, Canisius won the first three games before Niagara took the series finale

The Griffs defeated Niagara, 8-0 and 11-3, in five innings at the Demske Sports Complex on April 28. In Lewiston, N.Y., Canisius earned a 6-4 victory before the host Purple Eagles picked up the 2-0 win in the final contest.

3. History for Hufford
Graduate student Erin Hufford hit a pair of milestones over the weekend. Hufford became just the seventh player in program history to reach 190 career hits.

The Cheektowaga, N.Y., native also crossed the plate for the 100th time in her career, becoming the 13th player in program history to achieve this mark.

Hufford is one of two players in program history to record at least 190 hits, 100 runs and 75 stolen bases in their collegiate career (Lauren Hope, 2008-11).

4. Speed Kills
Canisius is currently sitting at 99 stolen bases on the season, four shy of tying the program record, which was established in the 2008 campaign.

It would be the eighth time in MAAC history that a team swiped 100 bags in a season and the fourth time Canisius has done so - the most by a single school.

The Griffs would also be just the second school to record 100-steal seasons in back-to-back campaigns after Marist did so in 2015 and 2016.

On the season, Canisius has three of the top four stolen base leaders in the conference. Hufford and sophomore Christie McGee-Ross are first and second with 26 and 22 swiped bags, respectively, and freshman Sam Weber has stolen 17 bases on the season.

5. Postseason Bound
For the second straight year, Canisius is heading to the MAAC Softball Championship.

With the four wins last weekend against Manhattan and Saint Peter's, the Griffs have locked in a top-two seed, earning the first-round bye on Wednesday.

The tournament is scheduled to be played May 11 - 14 and all games will be broadcasted on ESPN3 or ESPN+.
