Softball Drops Doubleheader at Iona

Alivia Litchner went a combined 5-for-6 with three RBI to lead Iona to a doubleheader sweep of Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference softball action Tuesday afternoon at Walsh Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.
 
Iona picked up the sweep after taking down the Griffs with an 8-2 victory in game one, followed by a 5-3 win in game two. The Gaels improve to 14-18 overall with a 9-8 in the MAAC with the two wins, while Canisius fell to 8-20 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
Junior Olivia Manchester got the nod in the circle for the Griffs in game one and was credited with the loss, after allowing five runs (three earned) in two innings of work. Melissa Gordon earned the win to improve to 8-4, pitching all seven innings and allowing just two runs.
 
The Gaels opened the scoring in the first as Rachael Morales launched a solo shot to right while Lichtner followed up with a triple before later scoring on a sacrifice fly from Sara Pina to give Iona an early 2-0 lead.

Iona added to its advantage in the second as it plated three runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Lichtner. The Gaels tacked on two more in the third, as Hailey Guerrero launched a two-run home run to extend the advantage to 7-0.
 
The Griffs chipped into the Gaels lead in the fifth as sophomore Bella Martin lifted an RBI single to center, followed by junior Alyssa Onyeagwa's RBI on a fielder's choice to make it a 7-2 game.
 
Addie Smith closed out the Gaels scoring in the fifth with a sac fly to right as Iona cruised to the 8-2 victory in game one.
 
GAME TWO RECAP
Freshman Mia Preuhs started in the circle and went six innings in the loss. Allison Hoppe tossed a complete game for the Gaels, allowing three runs while striking out four.
 
Senior Bailey Alatorre opened the scoring in the first inning of game two, ripping an RBI single down the line to give Canisius the early 1-0 lead.
 
The Gaels were quick to respond in the bottom of the frame as Brianna Fischer lifted a sacrifice fly to get Iona on the board while  Guerrero added her third RBI of the day on a run-scoring single before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Smith as the Gaels took a 3-1 lead.
 
The Golden Griffins trimmed the deficit to one in the second when junior Ella Johel hit a sacrifice fly to center. In the third, freshman Avyree Sherman recorded a single to short, bringing in a run and knotting the game at 3-3.
 
Iona reclaimed the lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Hannah Werth before adding another tally in the following frame as Lichtner launched a solo shot to left, giving the Gaels a 5-3 advantage.
 
Iona kept Canisius from getting any closer, limiting the Griffs to just one hit over the final four innings as the Gaels picked up the 5-3 win.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius now leads the all-time series with Iona, 53-26, after Tuesday's sweep.
• Martin now has a hit in each of her last five starts, marking a career-best hitting streak.
• Iona edged the Griffs in hits, 13–12, over the doubleheader.
• Sophomore Mikaila Obenrader recorded four strikeouts in relief in game one. The right-hander now has 28 strikeouts, which ranks second on the team.
• Johel posted a 3-for-6 performance at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader. The junior now has a .381 batting average this season.
• Sherman notched her first two career hits, singling in both games of the doubleheader.
• The Golden Griffins left a combined 13 runners on base, compared to Iona's five in Tuesday's sweep.

Canisius returns home to host Mount St. Mary's for a three-game MAAC series April 11-12 at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
