Rowing Earns Trio of First-Place Finishes at Black Rock Cup

The Canisius rowing team earned a trio of first-place finishes at the Black Rock Cup on the Black Rock Canal in Buffalo on Sunday.

Canisius' varsity eight boats swept its pair of events while the Griffs' varsity four finished first in the afternoon race.

The Griffs' second varsity eight opened the day with a 7:57.2 time in the morning, beating Robert Morris by 26.9 seconds. The shell, featuring Macey Schneider at coxswain, Jaime Bennett at the stroke seat, Eliza Hanson, Skylar Vles, Cece Reiser, Isabella Rennoldson, Ella Väätänen, Maddie Nowicki and Brianna Sorrentino at the bow, finished 13 seconds faster in the afternoon session. The shell finished the course in 7:44.2, 39 seconds better than Robert Morris.

The top varsity eight earned a pair of first-place finishes, clocking a 7:20.7 time in the morning before improving by 10.4 seconds in the afternoon (7:10.3). Coxswain Ava Horgan, stroke Isabella Bruno, Teagan Johnston, Destiny Severn, Olivia Merolle, Lucy Winkelmann, Hannah Kenefick, Brynn Krolikowski and bow Emma Maturo finished ahead of the Colonials by eight seconds in both races.

Canisius' varsity four finished second in the morning session, crossing the line 17 seconds behind D'Youville and nearly 90 seconds ahead of Robert Morris' shell. Coxswain Morgan Marsallo, stroke Emily Haskins, Siobhan Dougherty, Gabrielle Guzinski and bow Brianna Shaw earned a first-place finish in the afternoon with a time of 9:16.2, nearly five minutes ahead of Robert Morris.
