Hockey Trio Recognized with All-AHA Honors

Led by All-AHA First Team selection Jacob Barczewski, a total of three Canisius players were recognized as the Atlantic Hockey Association announced its all-conference teams on Tuesday.
 
In addition to Barczewski, fellow juniors Keaton Mastrodonato and David Melaragni were also recognized as Mastrodonato garnered All-AHA Second Team honors while Melaragni was an All-AHA Third Team pick.
 
The announcement marks the second consecutive season that Barczewski and Mastrodonato have received All-AHA distinction as both players were named All-AHA Western Pod First Team picks a season ago. Melaragni garnered all-league distinction for the first time in his career.
 
A native of O'Fallon, Mo., Barczewski made 22 starts between the pipes for the Golden Griffins in conference play during the regular season, posting an 11-10-1 record. The four-time Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week honoree ranked second among league netminders with a 2.41 goals against average and was third with a .924 save percentage. Barczewski was one of the busier goalies in the league this season, ranking third with a 27.61 saves per game clip. He turned aside 30 or more shots on eight occasions, highlighted by four 40-plus save efforts.
 
Mastrodonato, meanwhile, complied 18 points on seven goals and 11 assists in 21 league games played during the regular season. The Powell River, British Columbia, native found his way onto the scoresheet in 13 of the 21 AHA games he played in this season, including each of the first four conference contests of the campaign. He turned in a quartet of multiple-point performances, highlighted by a three-point effort that saw him score one goals and add two assists in Canisius' 6-3 victory at Bentley on Nov. 6.
 
Melaragni garnered All-AHA Third Team honors after a regular season that saw him finish with two goals and 10 assists in 26 league games. The Philadelphia, Pa., product spread his points around fairly evenly, finding his way onto the on 11 occasions, with the lone mutlple-point performance coming in a two-assist effort in the Griffs' 2-1 victory at Holy Cross on Jan. 15. Defensively, Melaragni played a key part of a Canisius squad that ranked second in the league in goals against average (2.54), ranking third on the team with 36 blocked shots.

Canisius finished the 2021-22 season with a 16-16-3 overall record and a 13-11-2 ledger in Atlantic Hockey Association play, concluding the season with a .500 or better winning percentage for the fourth time in the last six campaigns.
