Iacona Nabs Pair of MAAC Weekly Honors

Canisius freshman midfielder Mia Iacona received a pair of honors on Monday as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its Bob McClosky Insurance Women's Soccer Weekly Award winners.

The Shelby Township, Mich., product was recognized as both the league's Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week after she scored in both of the Golden Griffins' games last week, helping the squad secure a bid into the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship for the first time since the 2016 campaign.

In a 1-0 victory over Marist at the Demske Sports Complex on Oct. 19, Iacona scored the game-winning goal in the 30th minute with a shot from just outside the box that found the right-hand corner of the net.

She followed that performance by opening the scoring in Canisius' MAAC finale against Manhattan, putting home a loose ball in the 12th minute during an eventual 1-1 draw with the Jaspers.

Canisius (5-4-8, 3-2-5 MAAC) closes out the regular season Wednesday with a non-conference contest at Delaware State. Opening kickoff between the Griffs and Hornets is slated for noon at Drass Field in Dover, Del.
