Hockey Trio Tabbed Candidates for Hobey Baker Award

Three Canisius hockey players have been named candidates for the 2022 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, foundation officials announced on Wednesday.

Senior Mitchell Martan and juniors Jacob Barczewski and Keaton Mastrodonato are three of 77 players representing 42 NCAA Division I schools to be nominated for phase one of the award process.

The Hobey Baker Award is awarded annually to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player in the nation. In addition to their performance on the ice, candidates must exhibit strength and character on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of the team, display outstanding skills in all phases of the game and show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

A native of Whitby, Ontario, Martan has appeared in 18 games for the Golden Griffins this season, leading the squad with 14 assists while ranking second in scoring with 17 points. Martan's 14 helpers are the most in Atlantic Hockey this season, and his 0.78 assists per game average ranks among the top 20 players in the nation in that category. Martan has done most of his playmaking in pairs this season as he has six multiple-assist games to his credit. He also posted his first multiple-goal performance with a two-goal effort in a 4-0 victory over rival Niagara on Dec. 9.

Barczewski has started 17 of Canisius' 21 games in goal this season, posting a 2.61 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. The three-time Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week selection and the AHA Goaltender of the Month for November has been even better versus league competition, posting a 2.52 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. A native of O'Fallon, Mo., Barczewski has recorded 30 or more saves in six of his 17 starts this season, highlighted by a pair of 40-save efforts. He stopped a career-high 42 shots in a 5-3 victory at Army on Jan. 7 and made 40 saves in a 2-1 setback at Bentley back on Nov. 5.

Mastrodonato has appeared in 20 games for the Griffs this season, leading the squad and Atlantic Hockey with 22 points on a team-high 10 goals and 12 assists. The Powell River, British Columbia, product also paces the AHA in both game-winning goals (3) and shorthanded goals (2), placing him in the top 10 nationally in both categories. Mastrodonato has tallied a point in 14 games played this season, highlighted by six multiple-point performances. He matched his career high with a three-point effort in a 6-3 victory at Bentley back on Nov. 6.

The first phase of fan balloting runs now through March 6. Fans can cast their vote daily by going to the Hobey Baker website at
http://www.hobeybaker.com/vote.

Following the conclusion of Phase I, the list of players will be narrowed to a Top-10 and that announcement will be made on March 16, 2022. Phase II voting on the Top-10 will take place from March 17-27. The fans' vote accounts for a full one percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year's award recipient.

The Hobey Hat Trick will then be announced on March 31 and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award will be presented to the winner on April 8, 2022 during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in Boston, Mass.

Canisius (10-9-2, 7-6-1 AHA) returns to action this weekend as it completes a four-game road swing with a trip to Holy Cross. Game one of the two-game Atlantic Hockey Association series is slated for 6 p.m. Friday, while Saturday's finale will be a 5 p.m. start.
