Women’s Soccer Falls to Cleveland State

Cleveland State sophomore Kathryn Ramicone scored a pair of goals in the first 17:00 of the match to lead the host Vikings to a 4-2 victory against the Canisius women's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field in Cleveland, Ohio. 

With the win, Cleveland State earns their first victory of the campaign, moving to 1-1-0, while Canisius drops to 0-1-1 on the young season.


The Vikings opened the scoring early with Ramicone's first goal of the contest coming in the fifth minute. The sophomore quickly netted her second of the match in the 17th minute to give her squad a two-goal advantage.


Cleveland State added a pair of goals in the second half of the game to seal the victory. Junior Maddie Young and senior Grace Grant found the back of the net in the 52nd and 71st minutes of the match, respectively.


The Golden Griffins earned their first goal of the contest in the 64th minute when sophomore Tiani Fonoti put one past the Cleveland State goalkeeper to make it a 3-1 game.

Jen Romero narrowed the Vikings' lead in half in the contest's 77th minute with her first goal of the season coming from a penalty kick. 

Freshman
Jordan Spencer made her collegiate debut in goal, replacing sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Jones in the 30th minute of the contest. Jones allowed the first two goals of the contest, while Spencer faced four Viking shot attempts, stopping two.

"Obviously not the result we wanted today, but I am very proud of the resilience we showed in the second half. Today showed us a few areas we can improve upon in the next few days as we prepare for Cornell on Friday."
 
Game Notes
• Sunday's game was the 13th meeting between the Griffs and Vikings.
• Romero's goal is the second of her career and the first to come in non-league play.
• Fonoti and freshman Emma Oliphant both had a shot on goal for the second consecutive game.

• The Blue and Gold will travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to face the Cornell Big Red. Kickoff on Friday, Aug. 27, is slated for 5 p.m.
