Rowing's Varsity Four Boats Sweep Colgate

Canisius' varsity four boats made their first appearances of the spring season Sunday, as the first and second varsity boats came away with a combined four top-place finishes against Colgate from the Black Rock Canal on the shores of the Niagara River.

The Griffs' first varsity four finished with a time of 9:34.8 in the first of two races on the day, finishing a full minute ahead of Colgate. The same group came out victorious in the latter race, posting a time of 9:34.8, which was 20.1 seconds ahead of the Raiders. The boat was composed of Maddie Folsom at the bow, Jaime Bennett and Jessica Flash in the middle, Lucy Winkelmann at the stroke, and Mary Banks as the coxswain.

Success followed suit for the second varsity four, which featured Ava Horgan as the coxswain, Julia Galante at stroke, Ryan Iacono and Siobhan Dougherty in the middle and Emily Haskins as the bow. The quintet won both of its races on Sunday, winning by a 10-second margin in the first race with a time of 10:29.4. It's second win of the day came as it finished one-tenth of a second better than the first race (10:29.3) and crossing the finish line 12.3 seconds ahead of Colgate.

For the Griffs' varsity eight, they finished behind Colgate's "A" varsity eight and ahead of Colgate's "B" team in both of its races. In the first race, the Griffs were edged by Colgate by 6.1 seconds, but the second race was a much closer contest. Canisius finished nine-tenths of a second behind Colgate's squad, who posted a time of 8:25.4.

"We were really pleased with how the girls trained this week in practice and carried it over into race day. They've continued to adapt to change and adjust when needed. We're excited to get back out there this week as we prepare for Robert Morris and Sacred Heart."

The Griffs close out their home schedule with another tri-meet on the Black Rock Canal next Sunday against Robert Morris and Sacred Heart in the Black Rock Cup. Start time is currently scheduled for 10 a.m.
