Canisius returns to action this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Iona. Start times for both doubleheaders, slated for Saturday and Sunday, is noon.

LAST TIME OUT
Canisius was swept by Fairfield in its four-game series last weekend in Fairfield, Conn. The Stags won the first pair of doubleheaders on Saturday, 7-4 and 13-4, before coming away with 6-3 and 8-0 wins on Sunday.

The shutout in the series finale was the first time Canisius was blanked since Fairfield eliminated the Griffs from the 2019 MAAC Tournament.

Jacob Victor batted a team-high .500 (7-for-14) with a double and RBI in the weekend series. Victor opened the 2021 season with three straight multi-hit performances, highlighted by a team-high three hits in the first game of last Sunday's doubleheader.

SCOUTING THE GAELS
Iona (2-2, 2-2 MAAC) is coming off a four-game series against Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. The Gaels were initially scheduled to play Saint Peter's, but a campus-wide shut down due to COVID protocol forced the Peacocks to postpone the series.

The Gaels were swept in last Sunday's doubleheader, losing a pair of 7-inning contests, 4-3 and 15-5. Iona would counter with a sweep of their own on Monday, winning a 16-10 slugfest before overcoming a six-run deficit to win the nightcap, 10-7.

Brad Polinski leads the Gaels with a .500 batting average and OPS of 1.125. Jake Liberatore (.438), Nick Carnevale (.429) and Will Jennings (.417) all have batting averages north of .400.

SERIES HISTORY
The opening game of this weekend's series will be the 60th between the two MAAC schools. It will also be the first meeting between the two since April 2018.

Canisius leads the all-time series, 35-24, including a 22-14 mark in New Rochelle. The Griffs have won their last 17 road games against Iona, dating back to 2009.

Since 2007, the Griffs have won 30 of its last 34 against the Gaels. The Griffs' .882 win percentage versus Iona is the best against any MAAC opponent in that span.

A FAMILIAR FACE
Iona head coach Paul Panik is quite familiar with the Canisius hues of Blue & Gold. Panik made 121 appearances, 101 of which were starts, in his four years at Canisius (2007-10). A career .262 hitter with the Griffs, Panik hit .278 in his senior year, belting five home runs and driving home 33 runs. He also posted a career fielding percentage of .987, having just seven errors in 556 fielding opportunities.

UP NEXT
The Griffs will host Saint Peter's in their home opener with a pair of doubleheaders on April 2-3. Friday's twinbill is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch, while the first game on Saturday is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
