Malek Green Named the MAAC’s Sixth Player of the Year

On Wednesday, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced that Canisius junior forward Malek Green has been named the conference's Sixth Player of the Year, as voted on by the league's 11 head men's basketball coaches.

Green, who led the Golden Griffins in both scoring and rebounding average, is the second player in program history to being recognized as the MAAC's top reserve player, as he joins with former Griffs forward Jon Ferris, who won the award at the conclusion of 2003-04 campaign. Green also becomes the third major award winner for the Canisius men's basketball program in the last five seasons.

Green ended the 2020-21 regular season as one of four players in the MAAC to rank among the league's top-10 in both scoring and rebounds per game average. He closed out his first year at Canisius averaging 13.2 points per game, highlighted by a career-high 29 points off the bench in the team's comeback win at Fairfield Feb. 19. He made his mark on the backboards as well, grabbing 7.2 rebounds per game, the best rebounding average for a Griff since the 2012-13 campaign.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native had at least five-or more rebounds in all 13 games played, making him the first player in more than 30 seasons to record five-or more boards per game through each of his first 13 career contests with the program. An All-MAAC Third Team honoree, Green averaged 23.6 minutes per game as the Blue and Gold's first front court player off the bench.
