Hockey Puts 12 on AHCA All-American Scholar List

A program-record 12 Canisius hockey student-athletes were acknowledged for their efforts in the classroom as the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) announced its "Krampade All-American Scholars" for the 2019-20 season.

Due to the effects of Covid-19 on actual grades for the spring semester, the AHCA adopted revised criteria for this year's honorees. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA for the fall semester and participated in 40% of their school's games. A small number of waivers to the 40% participation requirement was granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders.

"These are exceptional individuals," said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. "The sport demands a great deal from these athletes so it is a great statement they make, individually and collectively, with their ability to attain this level of academic achievement while contributing at the NCAA Division I level."

Graduated seniors Nick Hutchison, Jesse Pereira, Will Scherer, Matt Stief and Daniel Urbani were all recognized, along with juniors Logan Gestro and Tucker Weppner and redshirt sophomore David Baskerville. Sophomore Lee Lapid and freshmen Lincoln Erne, Simon Gravel and Ryan Miotto rounded out the list for Canisius.

Baskerville, Lapid and Weppner were all honored for a second consecutive season while Urbani earned All-American Scholars designation for the second time in his career after initially receiving the honor during the 2017-18 campaign.
