Stief Signs with Steelheads

Former Canisius defenseman Matt Stief has signed a standard player contract with the Idaho Steelheads of the ECHL, team officials announced.

The Steelheads are the ECHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars and the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

With the announcement, Stief becomes the third member of the Class of 2020 to sign professionally. Fellow seniors Nick Hutchison (Adirondack Thunder) and Matt Hoover (Utah Grizzlies) agreed to terms with their respective ECHL teams earlier last week.

A native of Weston, Fla., Stief appeared in 133 games during his four-year career with the Golden Griffins, recording 60 points on five goals and 55 assists. His 55 helpers are the second most by a Canisius defenseman during the program's Division I era.

As a senior, Stief served as an assistant captain, appearing in all 36 games and finishing the campaign third on the squad in scoring after posting career highs with three goals, 23 assists and 26 points.

The All-AHA Third Team selection ended the regular season tied for second among defenseman and 11th overall with 23 points (2g, 21a) during conference play. His 18 points on the power play matched Sacred Heart blueliner Mike Lee for the most in Atlantic Hockey.

Stief recorded multiple points in seven conference games, highlighted by a trio of two-assist efforts in wins against Niagara (Nov. 15), Holy Cross (Dec. 29) and Mercyhurst (Feb. 29). He also scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 4-0 triumph versus non-conference foe Union (Nov. 1).
