Yale Defeats Women's Lacrosse Sunday Afternoon

Box Score Game Recap
The freshman duo of Jill Gollob and Olivia Penoyer accounted for ten goals as Yale (4-2, 0-1 Ivy) defeats Canisius 17-7 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.

Five other Bulldogs joined Gollob and Penoyer in the scoring column as the Yale offense used a pair of scoring runs in each half to win its fourth game of the season. Sam Higgins recorded five assists, two ground balls and two caused turnovers to aid the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.

Yale goalkeeper Amelia Drake was credited with the win as she stopped seven of the 17 shots she faced before being relieved by Clare Boone in the second half. Boone made three saves on eight shots.

Senior Jourdan Roemer recorded her third hat trick of the season and added a helper for the Golden Griffins (0-6). Senior Kayla O'Connell found the back of the net for her first goal of the season coming off a pass from sophomore Marissa Malvaso.

Malvaso would add a goal of her own later in the contest, while junior Bryar Cummings and graduate student transfer Rachel Heidenreich both found the back of the net for the second game in a row.

With the game tied at 1-1 with just over 13-minutes left in the first half, Yale broke off eight straight goals over the next ten minutes to go up 9-1. Heidenreich scored right before the intermission to get one back for the Griffs and make the score 9-2.

After allowing nine goals in the first half, freshman Shannon Maroney was replaced in net by sophomore Lauren Gilbert.

Canisius came out hot to start the second, out-scoring Yale 3-1 in the first 11-minutes to trim the Bulldogs lead to 10-5. Yale would score the games next two goals before Roemer found the back of the net and put a brief halt to the Bulldogs run.

Yale responded just over a minute later on a goal from Penoyer that sparked a 5-0 scoring run for the Bulldogs at the end of which they were up 17-6. Canisius would make it a 10-goal margin at the 1:24 mark as Malvaso scored the game's final tally.

Head Coach Allison Daley Postgame Comments
"I thought we competed hard today. We saw glimpses of the team we can be and we need to continue to work and bring that everyday to practice and game days. It is important we continue to compete for a full 60 minutes."
