Hockey to Wear Retro Jerseys During 2019-20 Season

In honor of Canisius' 150th anniversary, the Golden Griffin hockey team will be wearing a retro-inspired uniform during the 2019-20 season, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Griffs will debut the jerseys, designed to pay tribute to the origins of Canisius hockey, during their Atlantic Hockey Association series versus "Battle of the Bridge" foe Niagara Nov. 15-16. The team will also wear the jerseys on other select home dates to be determined throughout the 2019-20 regular season.

The vintage white jerseys feature a striping pattern that mimics the original socks worn by the school's first team to take the ice in the early 1950's.

The crest borrows the arched "Canisius" wordmark from those same inaugural uniforms while the Griffin logo from the first varsity team has been added below it. Canisius' golden legacy is noted with the institution's sesquicentennial shield adorned on each player's right sleeve.

The uniform also features brown pant shells and blue-and-gold barber-pole style socks, further paying homage to the early years of Golden Griffin hockey.

Canisius (1-4-0, 0-0-0 AHA) returns to action Nov. 8-9 as it opens AHA play with a home-and-home series against Robert Morris.The Griffs and Colonials open their two-game set with a 7:35 p.m. puck drop at KeyBank Rink at the LECOM Harborcenter before moving to Colonials Arena in Pittsburgh the following evening for a 7 p.m. start.
