Ellen Newton Named YRL Unsung Hero Award Finalist

Junior goalkeeper Ellen Newton is one of five national finalists for the Yeardley Reynold Love Unsung Hero Award, the One Love foundation announced on Tuesday. Newton joins Emma Lemay (Marist), Erika Mazer (Lafayette College), Emma Dunne (Yale), and Alex Gambacorta (Marquette), as finalists.

The Yeardley Reynolds Love ("YRL") Unsung Hero Award recognizes the accomplishments of six student athletes (one from each division) who help their teams achieve success in ways that may not be measured in goals, saves or ground balls.

This honor places value on characteristics that are often undervalued in the competitively charged environment of college lacrosse. The Award recognizes the athlete who makes a significant contribution to the team while also bringing joy to teammates. The award recipients exhibit leadership as a positive role model and also are involved in community service. The recipients are awarded a sum of money from the One Love Foundation to be given to their favorite charity.

Newton has been a integral part of the Canisius community, undertaking a number of community service commitments while also balancing a full student-athlete workload.

On Monday, the college honored Newton, as she received the Student Athlete Advisory Committee Community Service award, which is awarded to the student-athlete who exemplifies a desire and passion to give back to those in the Canisius community and surrounding areas. This individual designates time out of their days or weeks to serve others.
