Canisius women's lacrosse's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title-defense begins this weekend, as the Golden Griffins open their season on the road at Northwestern on Feb. 10. Game time is set for 1 p.m. (CT).

The Blue and Gold come into this season with a new look to the team, highlighted a new head coach for the first time since 2003, as former Canisius standout, Allison Daley takes over the reigns of the program.

Helping aid the first-year head coach is a veteran-laden roster, as the Griffs return five of its top six point producers from last season.

All eyes will turn to MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Jourdan Roemer, along with Lauren Smolensky and Jen Reininger to help keep the high powered Griff offense going. Last season the trio combined for 101 goals, 79 assists and 180 total points.

Reininger and Rebecca VanLaeken joined Roemer on the All-MAAC Preseason Team, and will be relied upon heavily moving into the 2018 campaign.

Also returning to the Blue and Gold attack is the always-dangerous, Allie Stewart, who posted 47 points (33 goals, 14 assists).

Bryar Cummings and Emma Mryglod will also see increased roles on the team, as they continue to grow, and will be counted on to play some valuable minutes for the Canisius roster.

On the defensive side of things Nicole Nelson returns as the unquestioned leader of the group headed into her senior season, and is joined by sophomores Riley Lucarelli and Carley Thomas as the veteran returners.

The last line of defense has been one of the most reliable in the MAAC throughout her career, as Rebecca VanLaeken returns for her senior season. Ellen Newton joins her, for her junior campaign.

Joining the team for their first taste of collegiate action are nine newcomers looking to make an impact.

Interestingly enough, the Griffs have a pair of sisters in Emily Van Kessel (goaltender) and Kaitlan Van Kessel (defense) and a trio of triplets in Marissa Malvaso (midfield), Antonia Malvaso (midfield) and Miranda Malvaso (attack).

Also bolstering the Canisius roster is midfielder Georgia Pavone, defender Ilia Bagley, forward Skylar Burlee and goaltender Lauren Gilbert.

The contributions of any number of the new faces on Main street will go along way in helping the Blue and Gold earn its third-straight MAAC championship and sixth in seven years.
