Large Announces Inaugural Recruiting Class

BUFFALO –  Six players from four states make up the inaugural recruiting class for new Canisius head coach Trevor Large, it was announced on Friday.
 
David Baskerville, Logan Gestro, Matt Long, Grant Meyer, Blake Wareham and Tucker Weppner will all join the Golden Griffins as freshmen for the 2017-18 season.
 
Baskerville and Weppner are both products of Buffalo, while Long and Wareham hail from Illinois. Gestro and Meyer make their way to the northeast from the Midwest states of Michigan and Ohio, respectively.
 
"This incoming class has a great combination of skill, competitiveness, and character," Large said. "Each of them brings different tools to Canisius, but they are all positive and team first. They will be relied on heavily to contribute to a strong returning roster that we believe in."

  • Spent 2016-17 season with the Corpus Christi Ice Rays and coach Brad Flynn, serving as assistant captain
  • Tallied 27 points on seven goals and 20 assists during the regular season and chipped in four points (3g, 1a) in eight playoff contests
  • Spent 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, compiling 63 points (25g, 38a) in 96 games played
  • Served as assistant captain for the 2015-16 season, recording 19 goals and 26 assists in 45 games played

  • Played 2016-17 and 2014-15 seasons with Corpus Christi Ice Rays and head coach Brad Flynn
  • Compiled six goals and 34 assists in 113 regular season games played during his two seasons with the Ice Rays. Also chipped in two assists in 10 postseason contests
  • Spent 2015-16 campaign with the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL
  • Recorded one goal and five assists in 49 games played with the Musketeers

Matthew Long | 5-11 | 192 | Forward | Orland Park, Ill. | Springfield Jr. Blues (NAHL)
 
BEFORE CANISIUS 
  • Spent three seasons with the Springfield Jr. Blues under head coach Tony Zasowski
  • Recorded 90 points (30g, 60a) in 158 regular season games
  • Served as team captain for the 2016-17 season, posting career highs in goals (17), assists (35) and points (52)
  • Participated in the 2017 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament

  • Served as assistant captain during 2016-17 campaign, compiling nine goals and 11 assists in 49 games played
  • Split time between Fargo and Youngstown during the 2015-16 campaign, finishing with 24 points (10g, 14a) in 55 games
  • Played for Springfield Jr. Blues of the NAHL and Youngstown in 2014-15, recording 17 points (7g, 10a)

  • Helped squad capture 2016-17 Midwest Division title and advance to semifinals of Robertson Cup playoffs
  • Recorded 24 points on five goals and 19 assists in 94 regular season games played for the Jets
  • Added two goals and one assist in 13 postseason contests

  • Spent two seasons with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and head coach John Tucker
  • Posted .898 save percentage and 3.15 goals against average in 71 regular season appearances
  • Turned in .944 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average in four postseason games for the Jr. Sabres in 2016-17
