Hockey Wraps up Road Swing at Mercyhurst

The Canisius hockey team closes out a four-game road swing this weekend when it heads to Erie, Pa., for a two-game Atlantic Hockey Conference series versus Mercyhurst at the Meryhurst Ice Center.
 
Opening faceoff for both Friday and Saturday's contests is set for 7:05 p.m.
 
Scouting Canisius
  • The Golden Griffins (3-3-1, 3-3-0 AHC) travels down interstate 90 this weekend to put the finishing touches on a four-game road swing that began last weekend at Sacred Heart.
  • Junior Dylan McLaughlin recorded an assist during the series against the Pioneers last weekend to stretch his team-leading point total to nine (3g, 6a). McLaughlin has recorded at least one point in five of the team's seven games this season.
  • Senior Ryan Schmelzer posted a goal and an assist to move into sole possession of second place on the team's scoring chart with seven points (2g, 5a). Schmelzer has tallied a point in each of the Griffs' last three contests.
  • Sophomore Nick Hutchison recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the series opener against Sacred Heart. Hutchison, who sits third on the team in scoring (4g, 2a), has recorded four of his six points during Canisius power-play opportunities.
  • Junior Simon Hofley and sophomore Daniel Urbani continue to split time between the pipes for the Griffs. Hofley leads the tandem with a .908 save percentage and a 2.43 goals against average while Urbani paced the duo in total saves (110) and minutes played (223:21).  
 
Griffs Post Split of Road Series at Sacred Heart
  • Canisius earned a split of its first road series of the 2017-18 season last weekend at Sacred Heart, falling in the opener by a 6-2 margin before rebounding for a 3-2 triumph in the finale.
  • In the opener, the Pioneers scored four unanswered goals during the second period to erase a 2-1 deficit and cruise to the four-goal victory.
  • Junior Felix Chamberland recorded a power-play goal in the first period and sophomore Nick Hutchison added his first even-strength tally early in the second to account for the two Griffs' goals.
  • In the series finale, senior David Bennett tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 15:48 mark of the third period to lift Canisius to a 3-2 victory in game two.
  • Chamberland and senior Ryan Schemzler accounted for the other two Canisius goals in the series finale.
  • Junior Simon Hofley posted 29 saves to record his second victory of the season.
 
Scouting Mercyhurst
  • The Lakers (3-3-2, 1-1-2 AHC) return their focus to league play after earning a split of a non-conference series at Keystone State foe No. 17 Penn State last weekend. Mercyhust took the opener, 7-4, before falling in the series finale, 7-5.
  • The trio of Taylor Best, Les Lancaster and Derek Barach pace a balanced Lakers attack as they are tied for the team's scoring lead with 10 points apiece.
  • Best has recorded a team-high four goals to date while Lancaster and Barach are tied for the team lead with seven assists each.
  • Brandon Wildung has started all eight games between the pipes for Mercyhurst. He owns a 2.85 goals against average and a .925 save percentage in 484 minutes of action this season.
 
Canisius-Mercyhurst Series Notes
  • Two long-time rivals, the Griffs have played the Lakers more than any other school in the program's history. In 86 all-time meetings, Mercyhurst holds a 42-34-10 advantage against the Griffs, including a 29-27-9 edge in 65 Division I meetings.
  • Canisius has had the better of its rival as of late, going 9-3-1 against the Lakers since the 2013 Atlantic Hockey Championship, twice eliminating Mercyhurst from the postseason.
  • Last season, the teams split a pair of meetings at HARBORCENTER. The Lakers posted a 5-1 victory on Nov. 25 before Canisius closed out the regular season with a 4-0 shutout on Feb. 23.
  • Canisius holds a 14-18-4 mark against Mercyhurst at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Griffs are 4-1-0 in their last five contests in the venue, dating back to the 2013-14 campaign.
