McLeod Named Canisius Student Athlete of the Week

Hockey junior Matt McLeod has been named the Canisius Student-Athlete of the Week. McLeod, who holds a 3.71 grade point average as a Finance major, helped the Golden Griffins split a league series against Atlantic Hockey opponent No. 18 Air Force last weekend at HARBORCENTER.

The junior has appeared in all five games for Canisius this season and earned an assist in the home opener against Robert Morris on Oct. 13. Freshman Matt Long began the play by ringing a shot off the left post on a feed from McLeod before the puck was knocked into the Colonials net by a RMU player on the ensuing scramble to knot the score at 3-3.

The Canisius athletic department has a strong tradition of success in the classroom, with 17 varsity programs recording a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the 2016-17 spring semester. Fourteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school's 330 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.28 in the spring session.

Additionally, last spring saw a record 27 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Those 27 student-athletes represent 12 different teams. A total of 227 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 69 percent of the College's student-athlete population.

The hockey team takes to the road for the first time this season as it travels to the Nutmeg State Nov. 4-5 for a two-game AHC series against Sacred Heart.
