Women's Hoops Starts Road Trip at Saint Peter's

QUICK HITTERS
• The Canisius women's basketball team heads out on the road for a two-game weekend swing, taking on Saint Peter's on Jan. 13, and finishing up with Monmouth on Sunday, Jan. 15. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.

• Coming out of the New Year the Blue and Gold had a bittersweet week, opening up 2017 with a win over Manhattan (62-57) on the road, but falling to Marist on Kids Day (85-74) and Quinnipiac (64-53) at the KAC.
• In its latest game the Griffs appeared to be going toe-to-toe with the first-place Bobcats, trailing by just one headed into the fourth quarter. However a 22-13 fourth quarter by the Bobcats sealed the Griffs fate.
• The Blue and Gold had three players reach double figures, with Margret Halfdanardottir leading the way with 12 points.
Sara Hinriksdottir also reached double-digits for the fourth-straight game, pouring in 10, along with fellow teammate Lauren D'Hont who notched 10 as well.
• Canisius enters the contest with a 3-12 overall record and a 2-4 MAAC mark.
• Hinriksdottir and D'Hont both average double-figures as the sophomore is pacing the team with 14.7 points per game and 5.3 rebounds, while D'Hont is scoring at 10.7 points per game clip.
Tamara Miskovic leads the team in assists per game with a 3.0 mark.
• As a team the Blue and Gold is averaging 61.7 points per game, while opponents are tallying 70.0 points per contest.
• Canisius is taking down 32.1 rebounds per game, however its foes are recording boards at higher clip, averaging 40.1.
• Turnovers have also been a point of emphasis, as the Blue and Gold are turning it over 16.2 times per game while opponents are giving it away 14.1 times per match up.
• In conference action, the Griffs have posted better numbers:
• The Blue and Gold holding an even scoring margin (64.2-64.3) and a much better rebounding margin (-3.4).

SAINT PETER'S SCOUT
• Saint Peter's dropped its hOURglass rivalry contest to Monmouth, 76-59, at the Times Bank Center on Saturday, Jan 7.

• Janelle Mullen led the Peacocks with 13 points and four assists while Talah Hughes added 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
• Zoe Pero earned the first weekly award of her career on Monday, Jan. 2 when she was named MAAC Rookie of the Week. She is the first weekly award winner under head coach Pat Coyle and the first player for Saint Peter's to win a weekly honor since Teresa Manigrasso was named MAAC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 23, 2011.
• Talah Hughes (Beacon, NY/ Beacon HS) is a dominate player for the Peacocks averaging 12.3 points per game and averaging 5.7 rebounds a game.
• Preseason All-MAAC Second Team member, Sajanna Bethea notched her second 2016-17 season double-double against Brown University with 25 points and 11 rebounds on (Dec. 22).

• Against Fairleigh Dickinson (Dec. 13), she came close to posting a triple-double with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Bethea is currently averaging 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds this season.

SERIES HISTORY VS. SAINT PETER'S
• This is the 59th meeting all-time in program history between these teams, as Saint Peter's holds a slight edge, 30-28.

• The first game between these two squads came in 1985-86 season and Canisius didn't record its first win until 1991 with a two game-sweep of the Peacocks.
• Saint Peter's dominated the Griffs, early in the series,  holding a 23-7 lead over Canisius leading into the 2002 season.
• Following the Griffs win in the MAAC tournament in 2002, Canisius has started its own string of dominance, going 22-7 since that time.
• Head coach Terry Zeh has also enjoyed great success against Saint Peter's having gone 20-7.

HINRIKSDOTTIR CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Sara Hinriksdottir is having the best season of any player on the Griffs right now and the statistics show that she's ranking right up there with the MAAC best.

• Hinriksdottir is currently ranked sixth in the conference in points per game (14.7)  and 20th in the league in rebounds per contest (5.3)
• She's also been one of the more accurate shooters in the conference, ranking 12th in field goal accuracy with a 46.8 percent mark.
• On the defensive end of the court, Hinriskdottir is ranked 8th in the league in blocks per game, recording just under a block per contest with a 0.9 mark.

POINTS/REBOUNDS LEADERS
• The biggest story this year has been the breakout of Griffs sophomore, Sara Hinriksdottir.
• The second-year forward leads the team in points per game, notching 14.7 points per game, while ranking first on the team in rebounds per contest with a mark of 5.3.

• Hinriksdottir is one of seven players in the MAAC, who rank in the scoring top-10, averaging 10-or-more points and 5-or-more rebounds.

NINE IS FINE
Sara Hinriksdottir is having quite a season so far in her sophomore campaign.

• Hinrksdottir recently  had a double-digit scoring streak snapped at nine-games.
• The streak began on Nov. 16, when she dropped 12 points on the Bonnies and has continued from there.
• With her 29 point performance against Morehead State, she tied the longest double-digit streak since Ashley Durham streaked to nine-straight contests in 2012.
• If Hinriksdottir reaches 10, she will hold the longest streak of double-figures since Shauna Geronzin recorded 13-straight double-digit contests during the 2000-01 season.
• Against the Gaels, she began again, hitting 12 points, as the sophomore has now reached 13 games of double-figures out of 15 contests so far in 2016-17.|
• She's begun a new following the blip against Cornell, having now gone four-straight with double-figures.

EVEN PLAYING FIELD
• While the season hasn't gone the way the Blue and Gold has planned this year, the season's story has yet to be written, as the squad gets into the middle of its conference slate.

• One thing is for sure the Griffs have been right in the thick of MAAC competition this year, when comparing stats from its difficult non-conference slate to its MAAC numbers.
• In conference action alone this season, Canisius has an even scoring margin (64.2-64.3), while the problem area of rebounding has a much smaller differential of -3.7.
• Canisius has one of the better offenses in the league as well, posting 46.3 percent shooting from the field, while the team has held opponents to just 37.0 percent in MAAC play.
• Canisius has also been able to employ its motion offense, recording 15.5 assists per game, while foes are registering 12.7 helpers per contest.
