The Canisius outdoor track team took part in the Bucknell Bison Invite this weekend from Lewisburg, Pa., with graduate student Chad Maloy becoming the first Buffalo-area collegiate runner to finish a 10k race in less than 30 minutes, breaking the school record in the event by 16 seconds (29:53.07).
Two other school records were broken in the two-day event, with juniors Jeff Antolos and Brennan Root breaking their own record marks in the 5k (14:39.08) and 3k steeplechase (9:19.11) respectively.
“We had several outstanding performances on the first day of competition,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “Brennan and Jeff each broke their own records, while Chad erased the mark set in 1993 (Ron Danacik 30:09.04). He ran the greatest race of any runner I have ever coached.”
Maloy would finish sixth in the event, while being one of only nine runners in the competition to finish under 30 minutes. His time in the 10k event is the best in the MAAC this season by more than 30 seconds.
Senior Cooper Roach finished 14th in the 800 meter event with a time of 1:52.77, good for the third best time in school history and second best time in the MAAC this year.
On the women's side, sophomore Haylie Virginia excelled in the 1500 meter, gaining the second-fastest time in school history (4:47.59), while sophomore Carlin Sullivan finished 20th overall in the 10k (37:50.23). Other notable finishes included juniors Cat Niederpruem, who recorded a 12th place finish in the 3k (10:58.69) and Macey Walker who finished the 5k event in 18:25.07.
“The weather and competition were excellent this weekend, and our athletes rose to the occasion,” Huckle added.
Next up for the Griffs is the Upstate Challenge from Ithaca, N.Y. this Saturday Apr. 23.
