The Canisius college women's rowing team hosted the Black Rock Cup at the WEST SIDE ROWING CLUB this morning and the Griffs finished in first place in all four events that they competed in to defeat Stetson on the Black Rock Channel.
The Canisius Varsity-8 of Amber Giambone, Erin Grim, Madeline Kurka, Chanel Davis, Katie Hobika, Julie Sciandra, Molly Murphy, Nora Kennon and Hannah Blum finished in first in the Women's Varsity-8 over Stetson with a time of 7:57.8.
The women's Second Varsity-8 finished with a time of 8:11.5 defeating Stetson who finished with a time of 9:07.8, the Varsity-4 finished in first with a time of 8:42.7 and the rerow of the Women's Second Varsity-8, which had to row through an ice-field, finished with a time of 8:38.2 to clinch the victory.
"It was a great day of racing on the Black Rock Channel! The sun was out, the fog lifted, and for a brief moment the lake ice disappeared and we were able to race under ideal, if slow, conditions," said head coach Joel Furtek. " I'm proud of how well all of our boats executed their race plans today -- it was exactly the step we needed to take and will be the base of the next month's training and racing."
"We're very thankful to Stetson for flying up to contest the Black Rock Cup and look forward to racing them again in a month at the MAAC Championship!"
The Griffs next regatta will be May 1-2 when the team will compete in the New York Collegiate Championship.
