Indoor Track Competes at RIT Tiger Invitational

The Canisius College indoor track team competed at the RIT Tiger Invitational on Saturday, and saw 10 different runners race to top-10 finishes in their respective events.

"Overall, we had a very successful showing," said head coach Nate Huckle. "We shook out a lot of the cobwebs last week at Cornell, and the team as a whole looked sharper and eager to race today. There is a lot of excitement on both the men's and women's sides, as many runners are hitting their personal bests or near-best times early in the season."

A pair of Griffs won events on Saturday, as sophomore Cooper Roach took 1st in the men's 1000-meter run, finishing in 2:32.60, while senior Catherine Phillips finished 1st in the women's mile (5:16.11).

"Catherine Phillips and Cooper Roach each had nice wins for us today," Huckle said. "Catherine led her race wire-to-wire in a confident display of her abilities.  Cooper ran tactically and didn't make the mistake of wasting energy mid race like last week. His patience and strategy paid off, as he was able to put the field away with a huge kick from 400 meters out."

The men's mile featured three Canisius runners in the top-five. Sophomore Travis Jordon finished 2nd (4:25.53), while freshman Xavier Sauvageau placed 4th (4:27.48) and freshman Jeff Antolos finished 5th (4:28.19).

Junior Chad Maloy ran a strong race behind Roach in the 1000-meter run, finishing 7th in 2:41.01.

Canisius also put a pair of runners in the top-five at 3000-meters, with freshman Brennan Root just edging out junior Michael Anvelt for 4th and 5th respectively.

The women saw a number of strong performances behind Phillips as well, with freshman Haley Keene racing to a 3rd place finish in the 1000-meter run. Keene posted a time of 3:06.73. Junior Brandi Pettit finished six seconds behind Keene, which was good for a 6th place finish. Senior Jamie Wallace, rounded out the Griffs in the top-10 of that event, finishing in 8th place (3:13.82).

Senior Mikelle Cala battled near the front in the 800-meter run for Canisius, finishing in 7th place with a time of 2:38.62.
