Men's Lacrosse?s Season Comes to an End at Detroit

Box Score

A slow start doomed the Canisius College men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as it had its season come to an end in a 13-7 loss at Detroit. With the win, the Titans earn the final bid to the 2013 MAAC Tournament, while the Griffs finish the campaign with a 3-10 record and a 2-4 mark in conference play.

Senior Joe Rautenstrauch led the Griffs with four points on the afternoon, recording two goals and two assists. Senior Hugh Weir, sophomores Brandon Bull and Tim Edwards and freshmen Vince Gravino and Billy Jaccobi each added a goal.

Junior DJ Giacobbo anchored the Canisius defense with a career-best five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Alex Govenettio earned the start in net and took the loss, while senior Kyle Bell stopped 7-of-13 shots on goal in relief.

The Titans (3-9, 3-3 MAAC) dominated the first 11 minutes of the contest and it proved to be the difference in the game. Detroit raced out to a 7-1 lead with 3:53 remaining in the opening period, putting the Griffs in a tough early hole in a must-win contest.

Canisius responded well in the second quarter, inching its way back into the game. Bull scored a man-up goal with 10:10 remaining and was followed by Edwards with 5:56 left in the first half. Rautenstrauch then scored his first of the day with just eight seconds remaining in the second quarter to pull the Griffs within three at the intermission, 7-4.

However, the deficit proved to be too big to overcome. The Titans scored six of the first seven goals in the second half before Canisius netted the final two tallies for the 13-7 final score.

The Griffs finished the game with a 39-33 advantage in shots on the afternoon. Canisius also won 16-of-24 faceoffs led by Bull's 8-of-10 effort at the X.

A.J. Levell led the Titans to the victory, recording 18 saves between the pipes. Alex Maini led Detroit with four points on the offensive end, scoring one goal to go along with three assists.

Game Notes: The 18 saves by Detroit's Levell are the most by a Canisius opponent since Chris Sochacki also had 18 for Wagner on April 8, 2006 … Senior Mike Moran finished the season with a .614 faceoff winning percentage, the second-highest mark in school history … The game was a rematch of a 2012 MAAC Semifinal, which Canisius, 12-10 … The Titans have now won 3-of-5 all-time meetings with the Griffs, including both contests in Detroit.
