Canisius College senior Isaac Sosa has been named to the
2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District I Men's Basketball Team, the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Sosa is the
only player from a school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to receive
this honor and his name has been placed on the ballot for the Capital One
Academic All-America Team, which will be announced later next month.
Sosa, who
holds a 3.48 grade point average as a finance major at the College, ranks third
on the team in scoring average with his 12.8 points per game. The guard from Guaynabo,
Puerto Rico ranks second in the MAAC and 15th in the nation with 3.1
3-point field goals per game and he ranks 26th nationally in 3-point
field goal percentage, where he is shooting 41.9 percent from behind the arc. A
team co-captain, Sosa scored a season-high 25 points in the Golden Griffins'
win over Manhattan at home Jan. 17 and he drained a career-high eight
3-pointers in the Griffs' 82-54 win over Longwood Dec. 17 at home. He has hit
65 shots from long-range this season and he starts tonight's game against
Loyola (Md.) with three or more 3-point field goals in 12 of the team's last 13
contests.
Sosa is
the first Canisius men's basketball player to earn academic all-district honors
since former Griff Darren Fenn was
honored for his work in the classroom during the 2000-01 campaign. The Capital
One Academic All-District Men's Basketball Teams are released annually to
recognized the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances
athletically and academically.
Canisius
is in the middle of a three-game homestand, as the team will meet Loyola (Md.)
at 7 p.m., tonight in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs are 13-8 overall
and 6-4 in MAAC play this season.
