Canisius College head men's
basketball coach Jim Baron announced
today that Tyrel Edwards (Hamilton,
Ontario) and Dominique
Raney (Oklahoma City, Okla.) have joined the Golden
Griffins' roster for the 2012-13 season. Both players will have three years of
eligibility, starting this season.
Edwards is
a 6-foot-5, 195-pound forward who redshirted during the 2011-12 season at Olney
Central College in Olney, Ill. During the 2010-11 season, he averaged 12.3
points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 51 percent from the field and 73 percent
from the free-throw line while playing at Vincennes University in Vincennes,
Ind. He scored a career-high 28 points in his first junior college game, a
73-53 win for the Vincennes Blazers over Roane State, and he ended up leading
the team in scoring six times as the team went 18-13 on the year.
Raney is a
6-foot-4, 180-pound guard that joins the Canisius program after playing at Navarro
College in Corsicana, Texas. He averaged 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game
as the Bulldogs finished the 2011-12 season with a 25-11 overall record, a
Region XIV tournament championship and a berth into the 2012 NJCAA National
Tournament.
Baron also
announced that Sean Ezeamama and Tyler Funk have chosen to leave
Canisius to pursue academic opportunities at another institution.
The
2012-13 season will mark Canisius' first year under Baron, who was named the
program's 23rd head coach April 3, 2012 after he spent the previous
11 seasons at the helm of the Rhode Island program. The Griffs return six
letterwinners and three starters from last year's roster.
