Canisius College women's lacrosse head coach Scott Teeter named seniors Morgan Leonard, Gina Molfetta and Lindsey Morgan plus junior Maria Kotas captains
for the 2013 season as the Griffs attempt to become the first team in MAAC
history to win three-straight championships.
"We will rely on our four captains for their experiences of
winning MAAC Championships and helping us defend our title," Teeter said. "All
four players are tremendous leaders on and off the field and are a great representation
of Canisius College. As we continue to advance our program, this group has all
the qualities to lead us in the right direction and to take the next step."
The 2012 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, Leonard anchored
the Canisius defense last season with team bests in caused turnovers (40) and
ground balls (45). A unanimous selection to the All-MAAC First Team, Leonard
ranked first in the MAAC and seventh nationally with 2.11 caused turnovers per
game.
Leonard was also key in the Griffs' winning their second-straight
MAAC Championship, earning tournament MVP honors after posting nine points and
eight goals in two victories. Overall, the Sykesville, Md. native finished her
junior campaign with 39 points, 29 goals, 10 assists and 37 draw controls.
Molfetta has appeared in 30 career games between the pipes
for Canisius, posting a 6-4 record. A two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the
Week, Molfetta owns an 11.45 goals against average and .371 save percentage
during her Golden Griffin tenure.
Also a team captain in the Griffs' 2012 championship run,
Morgan earned first-team All-MAAC honors last season after collecting
second-team accolades following her sophomore season. Morgan finished second on
the team in 2012 in both goals (44) and caused turnovers (29). The midfielder
ranked second in the conference with 1.53 caused turnovers per game and fifth
with 2.32 goals per game.
During her career, Morgan has totaled 80 points on 66 goals
and 14 assists. She enters her senior campaign ranked ninth in the school's
record book in career goals.
Kotas is just the fourth player in the program's history to
garner all-conference accolades in each of her first two seasons. A two-time
member of the All-MAAC Second Team, Kotas totaled 31 points, 23 goals and
eights assists last season. In addition, She ranked second on the team in
ground balls (40) and draw controls (37), while placing third in caused
turnovers (23). Kotas has also been instrumental in helping the Griffs to two
MAAC Championships, earning All-Tournament Team accolades in each of the title
runs.
The two-time defending MAAC Champions, Canisius finished the
2012 campaign with a 10-9 record. Seven starters and 15 letterwinners return in
2013 as the Griffs attempt to become the first team in MAAC history to win
three-straight titles.
