The 2012 Canisius women's lacrosse
team announced their postseason award winners in a season that saw numerous records
broken and the Blue and Gold capture their second MAAC Championship title in
as many years.
Captains Megan Oosting and Carly
Quinn shared the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the Year award, as both
celebrated their record-setting careers coming to an end.
Oosting, who was named MAAC
Midfielder of the Year and became the second Griff to earn regional All-America
accolades, finished the season with a school-record 58 goals. In a game against Siena this season, she
recorded a personal-best seven goal performance on nine shots. Besides putting
the ball in the back of the net, Oosting dished out 11 assists and gained 70
draw controls in accumulating 69 points over her senior campaign. The midfielder's single-season points total
tied her for second all-time in school history with 2011 grad Taylor Gray,
placing the two behind only fellow 2012 Offensive MVP Carly Quinn. In addition
to her team honors, Oosting was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team while
receiving first-team All-MAAC honors.
In her four years on campus,
Oosting amassed 154 goals, 188 points, and 201 draw controls. Her totals for
goals and draw controls rank first in program history, while her career points
total puts her at fourth all-time, making her one of the best to ever wear a
Canisius uniform.
Fellow Offensive MVP and graduating
record-setter Carly Quinn also had her fair share of things to say about the
Canisius record books before she left campus. Her 2012 marks of 51 assists and
78 points both sit atop the program's records list for single season totals. In
the senior's final home game against rival Niagara, Quinn set single-game records
for both assists and points with eight and 10. Additionally to aiding 51
tallies for the Blue and Gold she had 31 of her own throughout the season.
Beyond just winning the Offensive MVP for Canisius, Quinn was named MAAC
Offensive Player of the Year, as well as first-team all-conference and a MAAC
All-Tournament recipient.
Quinn's career marks of 203 points
put her in a category of her own, while her 96 assists put her second all-time
behind only Lauren Walsh. The graduating attacker's success can be signified in
her 43 career victories, making her the all-time winningest player in Canisius
women's lacrosse history.
Morgan Leonard, a first-year
transfer from Delaware made an immediate impact with the team through winning
Defensive MVP. The newcomer played best when the stakes were high and was named
MVP of the MAAC Tournament after her eight goals and nine points catapulted the
team toward its second MAAC Championship in school history. Over the 19-game season,
Leonard had 29 goals, 10 assists and 39 points, while leading the team with 45 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers. She finished the season
ranked seventh nationally with 2.11 caused turnovers per game. Beyond her
recognition from the team, the MAAC named her to the conference's first-team,
All-Tournament Team, and Co-Defensive Player of the Year, making her only the
fourth player in Griff history to receive such recognition.
In Kayla Scully's first year on the
team, the freshman netminder proved to be a vital cog in Canisius' capturing of
the MAAC crown. Participating in 14 games, while starting 11, the All-MAAC
Rookie team honoree posted a 6-6 record, with a .474 save percentage and 9.22
goals against average. In a commanding 13-5 win over Colgate, Scully posted a
career-best 12 saves.
Senior defender and winner of the Kathy
Fiore Memorial Award, Rachel Brand played in 73 games over her four-year career
with the Griffs. During that span, the defender collected 20 goals, 11 assists,
31 points and 40 ground balls in aiding the team toward two MAAC titles.
Rounding-out the 2012 women's lacrosse award
winners was junior captain and Iron Griff recipient Lindsey Morgan. Her four
goals, and five points against Fairfield in the MAAC championship facilitated
the Griffs' repeat of the title. Morgan notched 44 goals and 50 points over
her junior campaign, while starting and appearing in all 19 games.
The 2012 Griffs finished with a
MAAC title and 10-9 record, graduating the winningest class of seniors in
program history, collecting 42 wins since stepping on campus in 2009.
