After helping the Canisius College women's lacrosse team to
a perfect 2-0 start to the 2012 season, three Griffs were honored by the MAAC
on Tuesday. Senior Carly Quinn earned the conference's Offensive Player of the
Week, junior Gina Molfetta was named the Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Tori Quinn was
selected as the Rookie of the Week.
The trio helped the Griffs to the program's second-ever 2-0
start and the first since the 2002 campaign. Canisius opened the 2012 season
with an 11-10 victory over Robert Morris on Wednesday before defeating
Monmouth, 19-11, on Saturday.
Carly Quinn led the Canisius attack with 11 points in the
two victories, scoring five goals and adding six assists. She posted three
assists in the season opener before leading the Griffs with eight points, five
goals and three helpers against Monmouth. Early in her senior campaign, Quinn
places sixth nationally with 5.50 points per game and fourth with 3.00 assists
per game.
During the 2011 season, Quinn recorded 65 points - the
second-most in the program's history - on 43 goals and 22 assists. Receiving
MAAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the fourth time in her career,
Quinn currently ranks fifth in the program's history with 136 career points,
sixth with 81 career goals and fourth with 55 career assists.
Molfetta anchored the Canisius defense to its best start in
10 seasons, posting a .417 save percentage in the team's two wins during the
week. Molfetta matched a career high with 10 saves in the season opener against
Robert Morris, including a point-blank stop with just 30 seconds remaining to
preserve the one-goal victory. She followed with five saves in the win at
Monmouth.
The weekly honor is the second for Molfetta in her career.
Tori Quinn wasted no time contributing to the Griffs'
success. In her first two collegiate games, Quinn recorded four draw controls,
three caused turnovers, one ground ball and one goal with her three caused
turnovers currently tied for the team lead. In the one-goal victory over Robert
Morris, Quinn led the Griffs with four draw controls and three caused turnovers
before adding her first collegiate goal in her second career game against
Monmouth.
The Griffs return to action on Wednesday afternoon, playing
at Duquesne. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
