Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past St. Bonaventure, 20-8

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-8 victory against Western New York rival St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs improve to 3-5 with the victory, while the Bonnies drop to 2-2.

"Today was a great team effort from the play of our goalie all the way to the attack," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "I thought we came out a little flat early but then found our stride and didn't look back. It was a great way to end a tough stretch of games in our schedule. We'll take a couple of days to rest and then get back to work as we prepare to start conference play."

Senior Carly Quinn matched a season high with eight points in the victory, netting four goals to go along with four assists. Seniors Megan Oosting and Kristy Wilensky and junior Morgan Leonard all registered hat tricks with Leonard also adding two assists for five points.

Senior Theresa Walton and junior Lindsey Morgan chipped in two goals apiece with junior Meghan McGunigle, sophomore Maria Kotas and freshman Natalie Wagaman rounding out the scoring for Canisius with a tally each.

Freshman netminder Kayla Scully stopped 10 shots on goal for Canisius to anchor the Griff defense and earn her first collegiate victory.

After both teams netted a pair of goals to start the game, it was all Canisius for the remainder of the contest. The Griffs netted the next eight goals of the game, including the final six in just 4:25, to take a commanding 10-2 advantage. St. Bonaventure finally ended the run with 12:38 remaining in the half, but Canisius netted two of the final three goals of the half for a 12-4 intermission lead.

The Griffs continued their dominance in the second stanza, doubling the Bonnies, 8-4, en route to the 20-8 victory.

Canisius finished the game with a 28-24 advantage in shots with both schools winning 15 draw controls. Mackenzie Jordan, Marybeth Madia and Daisy Timlin led the Bonnies with two goals each, while Karly Kocis and Sara Schlagenhauf combined to make six saves.

The Griffs are off until Saturday, March 31 when the team begins conference action against Manhattan. The defending MAAC Champions, Canisius hosts the Jaspers at the Demske Sports Complex with first draw scheduled for 11 a.m.

Game Notes: Canisius has won the last three games in the series after losing seven-straight from 2001 to 2009 ... The goal for Wagaman was the first of her collegiate career ... The eight points for Quinn is one shy of her career high ... Quinn passed former teammate Taylor Gray for fourth in the program's record book for career points ... Quinn now has 155 career points (90g, 65a), while Gray posted 149 points (80g, 69a) from 2008 to 2011 ... Leonard recorded the first hat trick of her tenure with Canisius, while Wilenskey registered her third career hat trick.
