The Canisius College women's lacrosse team couldn't overcome the hot shooting of Cornell on Tuesday afternoon as the Griffs dropped their fourth-straight game. The Big Red shot 72.4 percent in the victory, including 91.7 percent in the first half, en route to a 21-7 victory in Ithaca. The Griffs are now 2-4 on the season, while the Big Red improves to 5-0.
The Big Red fired 29 shots in the win - 26 shots on goal - and scored on 21 of its attempts. Cornell's 72.4 percent shooting is the highest by a Canisius opponent in the last 10 years.
"This team needs to find their identity in a hurry," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We have been on a rollercoaster ride this season with so many ups and downs with our consistency. We made too many mistakes early today to get behind and we are not going to be able to crawl back against a quality team like Cornell."
The Big Red scored 53 seconds into the game to take the lead for good and totaled three scores in the opening 147 seconds to force an early Canisius timeout. The Griffs attempted to keep the game close but despite both teams recording 12 shots in the first 30 minutes of action, Cornell headed into the locker room with an 11-5 lead.
Cornell continued its strong offensive performance in the second half, netting the first eight goals of the period for a 19-5 lead before finishing with the 21-7 victory.
Senior Megan Oosting led the Griffs with two tallies, while senior Theresa Walton, juniors Kate Gosson and Lindsey Morgan and freshmen Meghan Cuddy and Whitley Perry each netted one goal.
Jessi Steinberg led the Big Red with six points and five goals in the win. Three goalies combined to make nine saves for Cornell on 20 Canisius shots.
Canisius returns to action on Sunday, hosting nationally-ranked Ohio State. The Griffs and 12th-ranked Buckeyes are set to meet at the Demske Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
