QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team conclude the regular season with two home games this weekend, starting with Friday night's game against Manhattan College.
  • Manhattan defeated Canisius 73-51 in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 13, in Riverdale and has won the last four meetings between the teams.
  • Friday's game is a part of the nationwide Play4Kay campaign. It is the official charity for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The driving focus is to raise funds for breast cancer research. 
  • Through Wednesday's games, the Griffs are second in the country with an assist on 71.0 percent of their field goals. Canisius is averaging 15.1 assists per game in the last eight games and has an assist on 78 percent of its baskets during that span.
  • Canisius ranks fifth nationally in free-throw percentage and currently leads the MAAC at 78.1 percent. Junior Ashley Durham ranks fifth nationally and leads the MAAC at 88.7 percent, which would be the highest single-season percentage in program history.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito ranks 23rd nationally in 3-point field goal percentage.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli has made 50 3-pointers on the season, the most among all MAAC freshmen and fourth-most by a freshman in program history.
  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle is averaging 14.7 points in the last six games and is shooting 55.2 percent on two-point shots since Dec. 18. 
  • Canisius is 6-1 on the season in games decided by five points or fewer or games that have gone to overtime.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, leads Canisius in scoring (11.4) and rebounding (5.1). She has scored in double figures 20 times in her career against MAAC opponents and is shooting 55.2 percent on two-point shots in the last 19 games.
  • Junior Ashley Durham is second in the MAAC in assists per game (4.4). Durham has scored in double figures in seven of the last 11 games. She ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage (88.7) - the highest single-season percentage in program history.
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, has made 60 3-point field goals this season, accounting for 75 percent of her made field goals. Morabito has made three or more 3-pointers in 13 games and has scored in double figures 15 times.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli is shooting 44.4 percent on 3-pointers through 16 MAAC games, which is fourth in the conference, and is averaging 9.7 points per game in conference play. Hoohuli has drawn a team-high 10 charges on the season.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes has grabbed at least five rebounds in 12 games this season and has recorded at least one steal in 16 games. Wilkes leads the team with a 48.8 field goal percentage, including a 55.7 field goal percentage at home.
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, has missed the last 10 games and is out indefinitely with a leg injury. Braun is shooting 50.7 percent from the field in her last 14 appearances and has at least one steal in 14 of her last 16 appearances.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp has 25 rebounds in her last four appearances, with 12 of those coming on the offensive glass. VandeBovenkamp has made 27 of her last 31 free throws. 
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in eight games this season, including a season-high 11 points on Sunday, against Fairfield. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 30 career games, including seven blocks in the last 10 games.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner is averaging 11.6 minutes in her last 11 appearances and 8.6 rebounds per 40 minutes this season.
  • Freshman Brooke Angelos is averaged 22.5 minutes per game last weekend and had a career-high six assists against Fairfield. Angelos is averaging 5.1 assists per 40 minutes.

MANHATTAN SCOUT

  • Manhattan enters the weekend with a 15-13 record and 9-7 in the MAAC. The Jaspers are tied with Loyola for third place in the MAAC.
  • Manhattan has won six of its last eight games, highlighted by a 48-44 win over Marist on Feb. 4.
  • Senior Lindsey Loutsenhizer leads the team and is eighth in the MAAC in scoring (12.2). She is fourth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (38.8).
  • Senior Alyssa Herrington moved into the starting lineup against Niagara on Feb. 10, and is averaging 4.2 assists and shooting 14-for-30 on 3-pointers in those five games. 
  • Manhattan ranks 25th nationally in steals per game (11.6), 18th in turnover margin (5.1) and seventh in fewest fouls per game (12.8).
  • In MAAC play, Manhattan is averaging 57.0 pts while allowing 53.2 pts. The Jaspers are shooting 40.7 percent and allowing 38.8 percent. The Jaspers are 10th in rebounding margin (-5.8), 10th in defensive rebounding percentage (58.7) and seventh in offensive rebounding percentage (32.2).
  • John Olenowski is in his third season as head coach at Manhattan and has a 54-38 record. Olenowski led Manhattan to a school-record 24 wins last season and an appearance in the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational.

SERIES HISTORY VS. MANHATTAN

  • Canisius and Manhattan are meeting for the 50th time, with the Golden Griffins holding a 28-21 lead in the all-time series.
  • Manhattan has won the last four meetings between the teams, inclulding each of the last three by double digits.
  • Canisius owns a 17-5 lead in the 22 all-time meetings between the teams in the KAC. The last Canisius win in the series came on Jan. 11, 2010, in a 69-65 double-overtime game.
  • Manhattan defeated Canisius 73-51 in the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 13, in Riverdale. The Jaspers made six of their first seven shots and shot 63 percent in the first half while forcing 29 Canisius turnovers. Freshman Kayla Hoohuli led the Griffs with 13 points, going 4-for-6 on 3-pointers.
