Anchorage, Alaska - The Canisius College hockey team lost its 2012-13 season opener, falling to host Alaska Anchorage, 2-0, on Friday night at the Kendall Hockey Classic.
"We had a real consistent work ethic today but a small lapse in our execution led to their first goal," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "Our last power play of the night was excellent and once we hit the back of the net, we'll be able to build some confidence. Tony Capobianco played real well but we just needed to get one to gain some offensive momentum."
Junior Tony Capobianco recorded 21 saves for the Griffs in the defeat.
After a scoreless opening frame, the Seawolves would strike in the second. Derek Docken's shot from the point with 8:37 remaining in the period snuck through for the 1-0 UAA advantage.
The Seawolves added an insurance goal with 11:11 remaining in the contest when Scott Allen finished on a 2-on-1 rush for the 2-0 lead.
Alaska Anchorage finished the night with a 23-14 advantage in shots. Neither team was able to score on the power play with the Griffs going 0-for-4 with the extra-man and killing all three Seawolf chances.
Chris Kamal stopped all 14 shots for the Seawolves to earn the shutout victory.
Canisius continues play at the Kendall Hockey Classic on Saturday night, playing Alaska Fairbanks at 8:07 p.m. ET.
