QUICK HITTERS

  • The Canisius College women's basketball team continues its stretch of seven out of 10 games on the road, with Sunday's game at Iona.
  • Canisius and Iona are meeting for the second time this season, with the Golden Griffins defeating the Gaels 85-74 on Kid's Day in the Koessler Athletic Center on Jan. 9.
  • Canisius leads the all-time series 24-23, but Iona has won four of the last five between the teams in New Rochelle.
  • Entering the weekend, Canisius leads the MAAC in free-throw percentage (79.1) and ranks fifth nationally.
  • Junior Ashley Durham ranks sixth in the country in free-throw percentage at 90.6 percent.  Durham leads the team with a 13.9 scoring average through seven conference games. 
  • Through Friday night's games, the Griffs are tied for sixth in the country with an assist on 68.6 percent of their field goals. 
  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle leads the team in scoring and rebounding. The Burlington, Ontario native has scored in double figures in eight of the last 12 games and is shooting 53 percent on two-point shots in the last 10 games.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes made her first career start for the Golden Griffins against Niagara on Thursday. The Windsor, Ontario native leads the team in field goal percentage (51.7) and is shooting 62.5 percent from the floor in the last five games.
  • Canisius has held its last 10 MAAC opponents to 25.9 percent from behind the arc.
  • The 2011-12 Golden Griffin roster features zero seniors for the first time since the 2004-05 team. Every other roster in the MAAC features at least two seniors.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFS

  • Sophomore Jamie Ruttle, the 2011 MAAC Rookie of the Year, leads Canisius in scoring (11.2) and rebounding (5.3). She has scored in double figures in eight of the last 12 games and is ranks ninth in the conference in field goal percentage (41.9).
  • Sophomore Jen Morabito, a MAAC All-Rookie Team selection, has made 37 3-point field goals this season, accounting for 72.5 percent of her made field goals. Morabito has made three or more 3-pointers in eight games and is tied for team lead by scoring in double figures 10 times.
  • Junior Ashley Durham has 47 assists in the last 10 contests and is third in the MAAC in assists per game (4.1). Durham also ranks first in the conference in free-throw percentage (90.6) and has made 67 of her last 71 free throws.
  • Freshman Kayla Hoohuli has 26 3-pointers in the last 13 games. She had 10 rebounds against Iona, the first Golden Griffin with double-digit boards in a game this season. Hoohuli has drawn a team-high seven charges on the season and is averaging 9.7 points in the last 10 games.
  • Junior Allison Braun, the team's captain for the 2011-12 season, who is out indefinitely with a leg injury, is shooting 50.7 percent from the field in her last 14 appearances. Braun has at least five rebounds in eight games and has at least one steal in 14 of her last 16 appearances.
  • Sophomore Courtney VandeBovenkamp is averaging 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in the last nine games.  She had a career-high with five blocks against Cornell on Dec. 28. VandeBovenkamp has made her last 14 free throws.
  • Junior Ashley Wilkes has at least five rebounds in nine games this season and has recorded at least one steal in 12 games. Wilkes leads the team with a 51.7 field goal percentage, including a 59.5 field goal percentage at home.
  • Sophomore Jen Lennox has scored six or more points in six games this season. The 6-foot-3 forward has a block in 25 career games, including eight blocks in her last 12 appearances.
  • Junior Melissa Gardner is averaging 8.7 rebounds per 40 minutes and has made 11 of her last 15 free throws.  
  • Freshman Brooke Angelos is averaging 5.1 assists per 40 minutes.

IONA SCOUT

 

  • Iona enters Sunday's game at 9-9 overall and 5-2 in the MAAC after a 71-54 win at Saint Peter's on Friday night.
  • Iona has won three straight and five of its last six games.
  • Senior Kristina Ford returned to the lineup on Friday night, after missing seven games with a knee injury. In 11 games, Ford is averaging 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
  • Freshman Damika Martinez, a three-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, is averaging 15.4 points per game. Martinez is averaging 17 field-goal attempts in the last eight games.
  • Tomica Bacic is averaging 8.4 points and 7.1 rebounds in 16 games, leading the team with a 43.2 field goal percentage.
  • In MAAC play, Iona is averaging a league-best 70.0 points per game while allowing 63.3 points per game. Iona has a +1.9 rebounding margin, a 64.8 defensive rebounding percentage and a 38.2 offensive rebounding percentage while making 6.4 3-pointers per game in conference action.
  • Anthony Bozella is in his 10th season at Iona. He has a 128-165 record with the Gaels and three appearances in the postseason in the last five seasons.

SERIES HISTORY VS. IONA

 

  • Canisius owns a 24-23 lead in the all-time series, after the 85-74 win in the first matchup between the teams on Jan. 9, in the KAC.
  • The Griffs' win in the last meeting ended a four-game winning streak for the Gaels in the series.
  • Only two of the last 19 meetings between the teams have been decided by fewer than 10 points.
  • Iona has won four of the last five between the teams in New Rochelle, with the only Griffs' win being a 68-51 win on Jan. 12, 2009, in the Hynes Athletic Center.
