Buffalo, N.Y. - Senior forward Kelly Reinwald and freshman midfielder Maria Nelms both received MAAC weekly honors for their performances this past weekend against Quinnipiac and Youngstown State. Reinwald was chosen MAAC Offensive Player of the Week while Nelms was named MAAC Co-Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon.
In the 85th minute against Youngstown State, Nelms scored her first collegiate goal to give Canisius a 1-0 victory over the Penguins on Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Reinwald picked up her second assist of the weekend, sending a high ball from the left corner into the scrum in front of the net with Nelms heading the ball in for the Griffs' lead and eventual game winner.
Reinwald recorded a four-point weekend in the Griffs' homestand against the Bobcats and Penguins, including a goal and a pair of assists. As the Canisius College women's soccer team watched their first half lead disappear against Quinnipiac, Reinwald tallied her team-leading third goal of the season and 29th career goal in the 70th minute to tie the Bobcats, 2-2, on Friday evening.
Earlier in that contest, Reinwald connected with freshman forward Mallory Illsley inside the box off a perfectly placed corner kick to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. The helper was her 27th of her career, bringing the 2011 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year career point total to 85.
Reinwald's selection was her third career MAAC weekly honor and her first Player of the Week selection. This season, the three-time MAAC First Team selection became the Griffs' all-time career assist leader (27) earlier this season against St. Francis (Pa.) with a three-point effort. Reinwald currently occupies third overall on the school list for most career goals (29) and points (85).
Following their recent three-game homestand, the Griffs hit the road for their next three contests. Canisius returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. versus Delaware State.
