The 2011 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Champions, Canisius announced
its postseason award winners at the team's annual banquet during the weekend.
Senior Taylor Gray
earned the team's Most Valuable Offensive Player
award after a record-setting campaign. A second-team All-MAAC selection, Gray
accumulated 69 points as a senior, netting 44 goals to go along with 25
assists. Her 69 points are the most in the program's history, topping the previous
mark of 65. The senior also led the Canisius attack at the MAAC Tournament with
11 points, earning All-Tournament accolades and helping the Griffs to the
program's first conference title.
The Baldwinsville, N.Y. native graduates as one of the best
players in the program's history. During her standout career, Gray totaled 149
points, 80 goals and 69 assists. She graduates ranked fourth in the school's
record book in career points, sixth in career goals and second in career
assists.
Senior goalkeeper Allison
Daley collected the team's Most Valuable Defensive
Player award, becoming the first player in the program's history to earn the
honor twice. A first-team All-MAAC selection for the second-consecutive season,
Daley posted a .496 save percentage and 10.27 goals against average as a
senior. She currently ranks seventh nationally with her .496 save percentage.
The senior also led the Griffs to the program's first conference title, earning
MAAC Tournament MVP honors following a 13-save performance against Fairfield in
the championship game.
During her career, Daley established the program's record
with 662 career saves, which also ranks as the second most in the country among
active players. She also owns the first, second, third and fifth-highest
single-season save marks in the school's history.
Senior Jackie Loson
received the Kathy Fiore Memorial Award. The three-time
all-conference selection anchored a young defensive unit this season as the
Griffs lowered its scoring defense by more than a goal. She ranked second on
the team with 43 ground balls and 24 draw controls plus third with 19 caused
turnovers.
Maria Kotas earned the team's Rookie of the Year award following a
strong freshman season where she garnered all-conference accolades. Kotas
recorded 21 points, 15 goals and six assists as a rookie, while ranking second
on the team with 20 caused turnovers, third with 30 ground balls and fourth
with 21 draw controls. A second-team All-MAAC selection and a member of the
conference's All-Tournament Team, Kotas is the first Canisius rookie to earn
All-MAAC honors since Ashley Gray in 2006.
Freshman Taylor Smith
was named the team's Iron Woman of the Year. Smith appeared
in 11 games with one starting assignment on defense, collecting one assist, two
ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover.
Canisius also honored its six seniors - Daley, Gray, Loson, Kaitlyn Black, Kathleen DiPasquale
and Brianne Laffey
- for their dedication to the Canisius program the past four seasons. The
senior class collected 41 wins during their tenure, the most by any class in
the program's history.
