Women's Lacrosse Canisius College Athletics

Women's Lacrosse Tops St. Bonaventure, 17-13

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 17-13 victory over local rival St. Bonaventure on Monday at the Demske Sports Complex. The win was the 12th of the 2011 campaign for the Griffs, matching the program's record, as Canisius improves to 12-5.

"Today was a great way for us to finish our regular season and prepare for our ultimate goal of winning a MAAC Championship," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "A school-record 12 wins during the regular season is phenomenal and we are excited to be heading to the MAAC Tournament for the fourth-straight season."

Senior Taylor Gray led the Griffs' attack, setting career highs with eight points and six goals in her final game at the Demske Sports Complex. Senior Carly Quinn added five points on a pair of tallies and three assists, while junior Megan Oosting and sophomore Kate Gosson each netted a hat trick.

Senior Brianne Laffey and sophomore Lindsey Morgan rounded out the scoring for Canisius with two points each. Laffey scored two goals, while Morgan posted a goal and an assist in the victory.

Senior Allison Daley and sophomore Gina Molfetta each played one half in goal, recording nine and six saves, respectively.

After a tight 10 minutes to start the contest, where both teams scored three goals, Canisius seized control of the first half with four-straight tallies. Laffey sparked the run with her first goal of the afternoon, scoring with 17:23 remaining in the opening half. Gray and Oosting then followed with free-position goals and Gosson finished the run off a pass from Gray as Canisius grabbed a 7-3 advantage. St. Bonaventure scored two of the final three goals of the half as the teams entered intermission with the Griffs leading, 8-5.

The Bonnies (6-9) started the second half strong, squaring the game at nine after a 4-1 start, but Canisius quickly reclaimed the lead behind the strength of Gray and Quinn. Gray gave the Griffs the advantage for good with 22:17 left in the game, connecting off a pass from Quinn. The duo then each netted a score for a 12-9 edge. St. Bonaventure was unable to get any closer than two goals for the remainder of the game as Canisius finished off its rival for the 17-13 victory.

St. Bonaventure held a slight advantage in shots on the afternoon, 35-32, while the Griffs won the draw control battle, 18-13. Emily Kane led the Bonnies with six points on two goals and four assists, while Karly Kocis and Sara Schlagenhauf combined to make seven saves.

Canisius now turns its attention toward the 2011 MAAC Championship, which begins on Friday. The second-seeded Griffs are set to play third-seeded Siena with a noon start. Canisius defeated the Saints, 19-8, during the regular season.
