Women's Lacrosse Tops Binghamton, 12-7

The Canisius College women's lacrosse team raced out to an early lead at Binghamton and never looked back, earning a 12-7 victory on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Canisius improves to 2-3 on the season, while the Bearcats drop to 1-4.

"We had a much better team effort today," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "Our captains really stood up and displayed strong leadership in this victory. Kathleen DiPasquale also did an excellent job of neutralizing their top scorer. It was a big step in the right direction and hopefully we can build off of it against Longwood in our home opener."

Senior Carly Quinn led the Griffs with five points and four goals in the victory. Senior Brianne Laffey netted her third career hat trick and added an assist for four points, while seniors Taylor Gray and Jackie Loson, junior Megan Oosting, sophomore Kate Gosson and freshman Maria Kotas rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a tally each.

Senior goaltender Allison Daley anchored the Canisius defense, recording 11 saves in earning her second victory of the season.

Quinn ignited an early run as the senior scored two goals to give the Griffs a 4-0 edge less than six minutes into the match. After Binghamton cut into the lead with a 2-1 stretch, Canisius scored the final three goals of the half to head into the intermission with an 8-2 lead, capped by an Oosting goal with just 22 ticks remaining in the half.

The Griffs continued their strong play in the second half and the Bearcats were unable to get any closer than four goals at 11-7. Quinn sealed the victory with her team-leading 10th score of the season to give Canisius the 12-7 win.

The Bearcats outshot the Griffs 24-19 in the game, including a 17-6 edge in the second half, but Daley recorded eight stops in the final period to secure the victory. Beth Moore led Binghamton with three goals, while Lauren Scott recorded three saves in the defeat.

Canisius returns to action on Saturday, hosting Longwood in the team's first game of the season at the Demske Sports Complex. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Laffey recorded her second hat trick of her senior campaign ... She also scored three goals at Detroit ... Canisius has won the last six games against Binghamton and owns a 7-1 edge in the all-time series ... The four goals and five points are both season highs for Quinn.
